Wont idle after warm

Vehicle has 87,000 miles and has a new battery, just had oil and filter changed, runs fine when engine is completely cold but after that the car idles and lopes and eventually dies as i am waiting at stop lights or in traffic plus when this happens the oil warning light dims on and off. if i keep my foot on the gas slightly when at a stop i can usually keep it running. this is very frustrating. please help. oh it did just pass emmissions and inspection a week ago and had a new catalytic converter put in about a year and a half ago.

SOURCE: engines idles rough and shuts off

  1. Answer: The engine noise, it is impossible for us to help you here without listening to the engine ourselves. As for your idling problem, check all the vacuum hoses and intake manifold gaskets as you might have a slight vacuum leak somewhere. In addition, check the idle speed control motor to make sure it is operating properly. If all checks out okay, scan the computer for fault codes. Scan the computer for fault codes. Also, check the oxygen sensor and coolant sensors and also Check your EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve it sounds like it is stuck open and needs replacing

SOURCE: Service Engine Soon Light

On all cars and trucks that are 1996 or newer they have a system called obd2 and the computer monitors anything thats plugged into it like sensors. The light is on because your computer has found a problem with 1 or more of them. If you want to know what area is having a problem you need to have the codes read by a obd2 scanner or code reader some auto part stores do this for free or oil

Try replacing the coolant temp sensor. It could be giving a false reading, telling the computer to add fuel.

I have an 03 f150 with a 5.4 engine. Truck starts and runs great when cold. Once it is warmed up is when the idle problem shows up. If I stop to run into a store or get gas and then restart the warm engine...

The symptom of which you are describing is known as "hunting"
for idle.
You need an idle air bypass solenoid, otherwise known as an IAC. The part mounts right on the throttle body. Sometimes they can be cleaned, but for around fifty dollars, I would suggest a new one.

Purchased focus sport 2006 model no service manual. Mileage 43,000 kms. Need to know service intervals either time/mileage perhaps a copy of the service schedule will suffice.

These maintenance intervals come from the maintenance interval calculator
at www.autozone.com, using a starting point of 25,800 miles (43000 km), and
assuming 1000 miles (1666 km) driven per month, and "severe driving conditions," which
are actually normal usage characteristics, such as frequent short trips, urban driving, waiting in traffic, driving in hot weather, trips under 16 km in cold weather, etc.

02 Toyota tundra won't idle. I put a new battery on and cleaned air filter

sounds like a bad idle control sensor.as long as you're driving it and giving it gas it runs somewhat ok right? it won't idle by itself,or it idles up and down by itself and then dies?thats a sign of a bad idle control sensor, some times they straighten up after the engine warms up and run fine.but eventually go completely bad and won't idle at all. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com

91 geo tracker -automatic -gear change trouble at cold startup.

Well, there are a number of questions that come to mind from a routine maintenance perspective.
Seeing that it is a 1991, has the transmission ever been serviced. A complete oil change out and filter replacement should be done every 50K miles or so.

Let me know how many miles you have and if you plan on keeping the vehicle.

Engine knock

The idle issue is normal. The idle is controlled by the ECU. There are no adjustments for the idle. Regarding the knocking noise, that could be several things, and I am hesitant to comment without hearing it. Take it to a Toyota Dealer & have a tech listen to it. We are very good at identifying noises on the service drive.

1991 dodge colt won't idle when engine is cold.

probably oil, it may be too thick when it's cold but once it warms up it liquefies and your engine runs smoothly. you could try changing oil, I'm guessing if you have a high performance oil the chances this is the problem may be greater since high performance things are usually geared towards working well when everything is hot
