Intake manifold sealant repair now leaking maybe oil? coolant b4

I had intake manifold removed so thermostat replaced, bolts broke as housing reattached. Sealant used on top of housing (manifold) to cover/seal any future leak from housing damage. Now leak from housing feels like oil, not coolant. Could it be?

You need to remove the thermostat housing again. Then you will have to extract the bolts you broke off. You will need to drill and tap them so you can use an easy out to remove the broken bolts from the threads. Then you can clean up both mating surfaces and replace the gasket and the thermostat. Check to make sure you did not crack the thermostat housing or you may have another leak when finished. They are usually aluminum and break easily if too much pressure is applied or they are corroded and weak.

How do i remove a thermostate on a 2001 chevy cavilier

NOTE: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® (orange colored, silicate free) coolant meeting GM specifications. On these vehicles, if silicated coolant is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 30,000 miles or 24 months.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain and recover the coolant until the level is below the thermostat.
  3. Unfasten the coolant outlet-to-inlet manifold attaching bolt and nut, then remove the outlet.
  4. Remove the thermostat. Clean the inlet manifold and outlet mating surfaces. To install:
  5. Install a new O-ring onto the thermostat
  6. Place the thermostat in the inlet manifold.
  7. Attach the coolant outlet to the inlet manifold, using the bolt and nut. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8. Refill the engine cooling system.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for coolant leaks.

  10. Connect the radiator and heater hoses to the outlet pipe.
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  12. Install the cover-to-outlet pipe bolt through the exhaust manifold runner.
  13. Properly fill the cooling system, then connect the negative battery cable.

To replace thermoastic

You will need a few things to do this job. Lets start with the auto parts store- new thermostat(make sure it comes with the gasket), gasket sealant, coolant, (if your hose are 3 years or more)new hoses, hose clamps. now for the tools, scraper, ratchet, extension, and metric sockets, flat tip screw driver, and maybe pliers. got it, good, lets start. follow the top hose to the cap( or thermostat housing cover), on the air intake, and remove the hose. now on the cap, you will see 2 bolts(one on each side), remove the bolts and save the bolts. gently pry up the cap, and scrape it clean(to the metal), removing the old gasket, and gasket sealant. now remove the old thermostat, and clean that also(down to metal also) to remove the gasket and sealant. apply gasket sealant and install the new thermostat. place new gasket, and apply gasket sealant to the cap. replace the cap, and bolt back down(do not over tighten, the cap will break) reconnect the hose. allow 30 minutes to allow the sealant to set up. start the car and let it warm up. check for leaks. no leaks, great. allow to cool, and replace any coolant needed. Thermostat Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Remove the exhaust manifold. If equipped with an automatic transmission.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: chevy_cav_02-04_tstat.gif

    • Thermostat.
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Thermostat.

    • Thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt.

    • Exhaust manifold if equipped with an automatic transmission.
  2. Fill the cooling system.
2.4L Engine To Remove:

  3. Remove the coolant inlet housing mounting bolts through the exhaust manifold.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the coolant inlet housing stud from the oil pan.
  6. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
  7. Remove the engine splash shield.
  8. Remove the mounting bolts from the transaxle-to-engine block support. Remove the support.
  9. Remove the coolant housing pipe.
  10. Remove the thermostat.
  11. Clean the mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Install the coolant housing pipe.
  3. Install and secure the transaxle support-to-engine block mounting bolts.
  4. Install the engine splash shield.
  5. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  6. Install the coolant inlet housing stud to the oil pan.
    • Tighten to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the coolant inlet housing bolts through the exhaust manifold.
    • Tighten the coolant inlet housing bolts to 10 ft lb (14 Nm).
  9. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield.
  10. Fill the cooling system.
  11. Inspect the system for leaks.
3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the air cleaner.
  3. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
  4. Disconnect the surge tank line fitting from the coolant outlet.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing to intake manifold bolts.
  6. Remove the thermostat housing outlet and thermostat.
To Install:
  1. Install the thermostat and housing outlet.
  2. Install the thermostat housing bolts.
    • Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 18 ft lb (25 Nm).
  3. Install exhaust crossover pipe.
  4. Connect the surge tank line fitting to the coolant outlet.
    • Tighten the fittings to 15 ft lb (21 Nm).
  5. Install the air cleaner.
  6. Fill the cooling system.
  7. Inspect the system for leaks

Removal & Installation


4.2L Engine

  1. Remove the necessary coolant from the radiator.
  2. Remove the alternator, as outlined in the Engine Electrical Section.
  3. Loosen the outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing. Remove the outlet hose from the thermostat housing.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing from the engine block.
  6. Clean all of the surfaces of the thermostat housing.
  7. Clean the sealing surface of the engine block.
To install:
  1. Install the thermostat housing to the engine block.
  2. Install the thermostat housing bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Lubricate the inner diameter of the radiator hose with engine coolant.
  4. Install the outlet hose to the thermostat housing. Secure the hose with the clamp.
  5. Install the alternator.
  6. Fill the cooling system with specified coolant and concentration.
  7. Inspect all sealing surfaces for leaks after starting the engine.

5.3L Engine
NOTE The thermostat is not serviceable separately. The water pump inlet and thermostat must be replaced as an assembly.


  1. Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat.
  2. Remove the radiator outlet hose.
  3. Remove the water pump inlet bolts.
  4. Remove the water pump inlet and thermostat from the water pump.

To install:
  1. Install the thermostat and thermostat housing to the water pump.
  2. Install the thermostat housing bolts. Tighten the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  3. Install the radiator outlet hose.
  4. Properly fill the engine cooling system and check for leaks.

How do you replace thermostat

Mr. Lakewood,
The thermostat is in the housing at the end of the top radiator hose where it connects to the engine manifold. The thermostat housing is clamped onto the hose and is bolted to the engine manifold by two bolts.
1. Drain enough coolant from the cooling system to a level below the height of the thermostat housing.
2. Remove the two bolts and separate the housing from the manifold.
3. Remove the thermostat from the engine. You may have to pry it out if it is stuck. (Don't be alarmed if there is no thermostat. Some mechanics remove them for troubleshooting).
4. Scrape off the old gasket and sealant from the housing and the manifold.
5. Install new thermostat, pointy side towards radiator.
6. Use Permatex #2 (non-hardening sealant) on both sides of the new gasket and bolt down the housing.
7. Replenish cooling system.
8. Start engine, allow to warm up and check for leaks.
9 *done*

The Permatex #2 gasket sealant ($4 AutoZone) is in a small tube. One small tube is more than enough.

How do you change the thermostat & refill the coolant on a 2005 chevy silverado? 5.3 liter engine.

Locate the thermostat. The thermostat is in a metal housing at the end of the radiator hose where it connects to the engine.

Drain enough coolant to make the water level below the the thermostat level so that the coolant doesn't spill everywhere...

Remove the thermostat:
The housing is held down by two bolts.
Remove the bolts, remove the thermostat and scrape the gasket and sealant from the housing and the manifold.

When replacing, use Permatex #2 - non-hardening gasket sealant.

Replenish the radiator with 50/50 coolant/water mixture (re-use what you took out; don't pour down drain or on grass - kills vegetation).

Remove radiator cap and let engine warm up (look for leaks) to allow trapped air in the cooling system to escape.
Note: there may be some burping valves near the thermostat. If obvious, open them to allow air to escape.

My van is over heating and i think my thermostat is bad.i need a location for were it is on the engine

The thermostat is located in the thermostat housing, which is mounted to the coolant crossover tube. The bypass hose is connected to the thermostat water inlet on one end, and to the intake manifold water outlet on the other. The thermostat is not located in the intake manifold water outlet, where the upper radiator hose is connected.

  1. Drain the radiator and recycle the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the upper radiator hose bracket bolt and remove the bracket.
  3. On 1993-98 3.0L engine models:
    1. Remove the bolt from the A/C high pressure line bracket at the front of the engine.
    2. Remove the two A/C accumulator/drier bracket bolts.
    3. Position the accumulator/drier and A/C line out of the way.

  4. Remove the bypass hose clamp and remove the hose from the water inlet.
  5. Remove the four water inlet bolts and remove the inlet.
  6. Remove the thermostat from the inlet.

To install:
  1. Clean and dry the water inlet and thermostat housing mating surfaces.
  2. Apply a continuous bead of RTV silicone sealant 0.08-0.12 inch (2.0-3.0mm) wide to the water inlet mating surface.



NOTE The water inlet must be installed within 5 minutes of applying the sealant.

  1. Install the thermostat in the water inlet, with the jiggle valve at the topmost (12 o'clock) position.
  2. Install the water inlet to the thermostat housing. Install the bolts and tighten them to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm).
  3. Install the bypass hose to the water inlet, using a new clamp.
  4. On 1993-98 3.0L engine models:
    1. Install the accumulator/drier and tighten the bracket bolts to 45 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    2. Install the A/C high pressure line bracket and tighten the bolt to 45 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    3. Install the upper radiator hose bracket and tighten the bolt to 34-48 ft. lbs. (46-65 Nm).




NOTE Allow the sealant to dry for at least 30 minutes before adding coolant.

  1. Fill the cooling system. Run the engine and check for leaks.

NEED LOCATION OF THERMOSTAT IN 1991 CADILLAC SEVILLE

  1. Drain the coolant to a level below the thermostat housing.
  2. On some vehicles, access is easier if the front-end beauty panel and the air cleaner are removed.
  3. Remove the 2 bolts securing the thermostat housing to the intake manifold.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove the thermostat and O-ring from the housing.
