Question about 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse

98 mitsubishi eclipse 3rd gear

We have a 98 mitsubishi eclipse and when you try to shift from 2nd into 3rd, you hear a grinding sound. this also happens when trying to float into 4th gear, so its grinding when you try to shift into 3rd or 4th gear. could this be a synchronizer problem or just a fluid level problem?

Try changing your fuel filter, like on all fuel injection and electronic ignition problems the shade tree has to use the process of elimination. This is one of the cheapest.

SOURCE: overdrive will not engage

Check the OD solenoid on top of the tranny (drverside) apply 12V + to it and take for a test run if she works then you know the problem may be the OD relay, temp switch or its wiring. I had just simply rewired a new OD switch.

Please let me know if this help.

Thanks,
Tom

SOURCE: transmission shifting problem

Don't know if you ever got this fixed, but my guess is it's a bad throttle position sensor.

SOURCE: cant get 1st gear. 2nd gear nosiey and crunches,

Hi there

There is a similar issue on a 1995 GTO I am looking at buying.

Aparently the gear changes are not affected AT ALL, but the actual gear stick sits to the left and you have to 'feed in' gears.

He's been told that a new gear linkage (from a breakers) will solve the problem.

Is this the case?

And if so, are the linkages expensive, and how much labour (approx) to get my local garage to change it over.

Many thanks!

The 3rd Gear Synchro is worn or damaged, which is why it grinds when you try to upshift or downshift into 3rd gear. When it goes out completely you will have a very hard time shifting into 3rd gear, since the Synchro lines up the gears to make shifts smooth and easy.

It sounds like your clutch isn't releasing properly. Do you need to adjust the pedal free play or bleed the hydraulics? If that doesn't fix it you may need take another look at the clutch you put in.

Grinding sound

What is happening to you is worn out sincronizers in you transmission. They are used to mesh the gears between shifts. They are made of brass and wear out easily on the 2nd gen cars. It grinds normally going into 2nd gear and into 3rd if its really worn. If you want a stronger transmission buy the 93 and up 3rd gen tranny. It is an upgraded transmission with dual sincros. Yours does need rebuilt. Or you can find one on the MR2 board for a good price used. I prchased a 93 trans for $1000. An older one will be about 200. Also it depends if its turbo, lsd or not. Good luck!

Sounds like a sychro problem when you rebuilt. I have always found with my gearbox, even when warm it is easy to beat the sychros so i make slower changes. Unless you fix the sychro rings the problem will only get worse
