To understand you
the car runs but when you engage drive it doesn't move
however if you move the selector from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive it does move
is that correct
logically if that is the case the auto transmission is working but the drive to the rear wheels is not functioning
That would point to a problem in the , diff connection ( broken rear axle )
by engaging 4 wheel drive you are moving by the front diff only

you removed the switch, but what about the lock cylinder the key goes into?

If you are driving in 4 wheel drive on hard surface then you have drive line torque lock up as there is no centre diff to allow the front and rear wheels to equalise out the torque . 4 wheel drive is for use when on dirt / snow / ice where the differences between the front and back are allowed to slip the tyres . Jack up a rear wheel and allow the torque to dissipate by rotating a wheel . A point from all 4x4 manufacturers is that you NEVER drive in 4 wheel drive unless you are on dirt or ice/snow conditions. You have probably been getting away with it as any bump that lifts a wheel from the road surface will allow the wheel to slip. Even running the tyre on the white painted line on the road or any wet patch on the road will help ease the torque loading

No it will not, First of all they are totally two different Makes and Models and the Toyota is Front Wheel Drive and the Volvo is rear Wheel Drive.

yes as long as it is in 2 wheel drive and not locked in four wheel drive pull the front 2 tires on as you normally would

SOUNDS LIKE U MAY HAVE FAILED BEARINGS, THEY WOULD BE THE ONLY THING THAT COULD MAKE THAT MUCH NOISE. REPLACE THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL BEARINGS, ALL OF THEM.

It appears you need to kick it off. Siezed up on the hub.

Auto hubs locked up? Electrical relay faulty? May need servicing.
