Have to drop fuel tank & replace the sending unit
I would not do that
It is too old for that trouble & expense
Just fill it once a week & keep track of mileage
Testimonial: "That makes sense! I'm just a little concerned because I go on a lot of road trips, but like you said, ill just have to keep track of the milage. Thank you!"
Might be a faulty resistor in your fuel gauge or bad wiring, might have to replace the gauge if it is not the fuel sender

Gm has a real problem with fuel tank sending units. That is what is wrong. You need a fuel tank sending unit. You can only get them aftermarket with the whole fuel pump module, but you can buy them seperate if you buy it from the dealer.

I had the same problem. My battery was going bad. When I replaced it with a new one, the fuel gauge worked fine.

the problem is caused by a defective gas gauge sending unit, this part is located inside the gas tank, you must remove the gas tank to replace it.

It sounds like the float on the sending unit is sinking. Don't know what the float is made of, but over time, it will soak up gas and start to get heavy. This would cause your problem. I don't think it's the gauge, but if you want to test it, disconnect the wires at the tank. The gauge will either go to full or empty. If you ground the sending wire, the gauge should respond the opposite way it was. good luck
