Sunfire gt. the car died :(

I have a 97 sunfire gt. i have only had minor problems..breaks..tires..i had to replace the gas tank a few months ago cuz it had a leak in it..but anyway..i just hit 150k on it and the other morning it died on me. im not sure what it is..my dad being a mechanic..took apart the engine cuz of a possibility of the cause and nothing..i think this is where it started...a few months ago my car started shaking after i took a right turn and it died. it was fine after and the idle time was adjusted blah blah..now..since that was adjusted my car just would shake once in awhile like it was gonna die when i applied my break for a minute.. but when i went to normal speed it went away. now a few days ago i went to shift from reverse to drive and it didnt kick into gear right away..and i hit the gas..and i heard a pop assuming its one of the motor mounds. thenn 2 days later my car died..now it wont start..my battery light came on and that was it..it sounded like something was getting chopped in my engine when i drove to get the car out of the way. and it was very loud. my dad was saying maybe it has something to do with the timing chain..a coil..or the alternator..its not the alternator. it isnt anything in the engine. his next guesses are something about one of the cylinders..and then something about the camshafts and valves not closing and opening when they are supposed to. im just a driver..i have no idea what to guess. if anyone knows what it is and has experienced it pleasee let me know!

My 97 sunfire idles fine but when you get on the gas it jerks & jumps if you push it to the floor it dies.?

Sounds to me like a clogged fuel filter or your fuel pump is going out.....I would check and replace the filter first......

We own a 1995 c220 four door sedan with a few minor problems, there is an intermittent fuel leak somewhere around the gas tank for the last few months, it drops a fuel spot about the size of a coffee...

Since the car died on you, I would think it was coming from the fuel line around the fuel tank area. (rear of vehicle.) A little investigation under the car may reveal a corroded fuel line, leak at connection to the filter or tank. Could be as simple as tightening up a connection or replacing a section of line. Those would be relatively inexpensive repairs. Worst case is it is coming from a line on top of the fuel tank requiring removal for repair. (More expensive depending on what the shop charges for labor) Any competent mechanic should be able to track it down and repair it in the $100 range plus parts.
Thanks, Mike

Bmw z3 2001 1.9 m43 engine, severe misfire at idle and through the rev range, stays the same, starting ok hot or cold, car in zimbabwe poor fuel quality but running ok before, gets infrequent use, replaced...

Make sure you dont run out of fuel, make sure 1/4 tank of gas is always there and the reason is that the fuel pump should be submerged in the gas all the time, if not then it will heat up and die.
It would also be good practic to change the fuel filter once a year, if there is no external filter then ad one in line filter for your safety.
As for the mis at idle it could be due to bent valve, burnt valve seat, vacume leak, head gasket minor leak, bad coil, shorted plug, bad gas. If the engine light is on which it should have because of the missing then I would like to know the codes.

Trying to locate the fuel filter and pump...

The fuel filter is in the hood (metalic black) and the fuel pump is in the fuel tank (either through the back seat or bringing the tank down.

Why is my 1998 sunfire gt eating fuel bad

Believe it or not, low tire pressure will give you really bad gas mileage. It happened on my girlfriends Sunfire. I thought it was a few other things, but when she took it in, the pumped up the tires and we noticed the change right after that! And the air is free! Unless you use a gas station air pump!

Im going to live it parked for 3 months

Hi, 3 months is not that long for a car to sit. But yes, turn the air suspension switch located in the trunk to "off", disconnect the + positive from the battery post under the hood, and last fill the gas tank (full) to prevent inner gas-tank corrosion. When you return, connect the + positive to the battery, start the car, then turn the air suspension switch to "on". Don't be surprised if the air bags in the suspension lose some air while gone, the bags are known to leak.
