We have replaced all four tires - we were told they were cupped - and had the wheel bearings fixed - still has a very loud roaring noise - can anybody give me an idea of what it may be?
Hi, My motto is that i will tell you what others won't and it sucks cause it affects ratings but nobody wants to answer a question like yours. The reason: Tooooo many variables and no sense. First, the cupped tires thing is BS. The cupped tires sound more like a horse on its last legs. Roaring is more like a wind thing, which points to a door or window seal or a leak in the exhaust. It could also be something aerodynamic, like a mirror that is not airfoiling for some reason. The best advice I can give you for something like this is to keep investigating till you pinpoint the source. I had an explorer that was perfectly quiet until I put the crossbars on the luggage rack. If the bars were too far forward they disturbed the airflow over the moonroof and the thing would moan like a tomcat on a saturday nite. I have a buddy that had an suv that he changed the airfilter with a non oem and had less pleats and it would howl at different speeds. It took awhile to track this one down. So be patient, look, listen and feel, get your whole family or some friends to ride with you and keep checking it out till you narrow it down. Did you ever investigate why the tires were cupped? Cause if you replaced them and didn't fix the reason it will happen again. it can be any of the above, rotate the tires and see if the noise location seems to change, but the last thing i would suspect is the CV, they just click when turning, the wheel bearing is my choice here, they roar, tires make a diff noise.
3 suggestions for you, you may need to check the tire pressure, get a tire alligment done, or you have a bad wheel bearing, usally a bad wheel bearing make's a loud roaring sound going down the road. I hope I have helped you.
we have a 2003 saturn vue which we installed new tires on and we noticed a noise about 6 months afterwards. it sounded to my wife and i to be loud road noise from the tires. the car was driven for 6 months and we decided the noise was annoing. had the tires checked only to find it was the left front wheel bearing which was replaced and stopped the noise.
I certainly would take it back to the shop that performed the brake job and have them investigate. If it was not making the noise prior to the repair there is a good chance the noise is involved with the brakes. A possible loose brake pad, a sticking caliper(caliper pins may need to be lubed) or any number of things could be wrong.
It really sounds like a wheel bearing to me, If you drive down a straight smooth road and gently rock the steering wheel back and forth, you can sometimes tell which side it is by the way the car loads the front wheels. I believe this bearing can be purchased as hub and bearing assembly so it is fairly easy to replace but the part is pricey. Remove the wheel, brake caliper and rotor, look through the hub flange access holes and undo the mounting bolts and pull the bearing assembly out of the knuckle.
That's indicative of a wheel bearing, which is why you were told to change that out. However, it's also possible that the carrier bearings in the differential (where the drive axles attach) have gone bad. That happened to me on my 300ZX several years ago, and I had to replace the diff bearings. I would have them checked out somewhere other than a dealer (you'll probably get a better price from an independent shop).
As a sidenote, to be sure it wasn't a wheel bearing, if you hear it quiet down in a turn one way but get louder in a turn the opposite way, it's likely the wheel bearing. If you turn left at speed and it gets louder, then it's the right bearing (since you're loading up that side of the car). If it gets quieter in a right turn, it's the right side (you're unloading that side of the car and not putting as much weight on it, so it doesn't drag as badly). See if you get that symptom just to be sure that the wrong side front wheel bearing wasn't changed.
