My 2000 ford contour has a busted fuel gage. 2 weeks ago I ran out of gas. Ever since then the engine chugs and chugs during acceleration. I have already run two tank fulls using Techron fuel injector cleaner. The problem is not as bad but it still exists. How do I change the fuel filter?
There are filters directly at the fuel pump (in the gas tank). These likely did their job and captured trash in the tank. The pump needs to be removed to properly clean the fuel pump filters.
The secondary or inline filter typically is located along the frame rail under the vehicle. It will be on the passenger side. Just follow the fuel lines from the tank along the frame rail and you will find it.
Regarding fuel gage: You say busted. Is the gage physically broken, or do you just mean it does not work?
If it does not work, then the sending unit is also attached to fuel pump, so you need to remove the pump anyway.
If you're going to this much effort, it is better to replace the fuel pump assembly.
It's under the right side rear door unscrew the clamp and use fuel line separators to get the front line off push in and pull out the line on the back there's a clip you push out

This is a notorious problem with the Windstars. There are oodles of ground straps in them. Make sure they are all clean and tight. ESPECIALLY THE STARTER GROUND STRAP. If it's loose, the car may just die when you turn up into a driveway or parking lot or just go over a bump. If you notice the "Check Engine" light comes on momentarily, at the time of the surge or the engine kills completely, it's DEFINITELY the starter ground strap! My engine used to kill at odd times -- even when on the freeway going at 75!-- Then we'd go over another bump and SURGE_O_RAMA, the engine's running again or I'd restart it and it would be fine for a while. What's happening is the loose ground strap loses it's connection when you go over a bump in the road. The next bump jogs it back into the connected mode, albeit tenuous at best. All of the computer techs couldn't find the problem. It took a 70-year old seat-of-the-pants mechanic to make the SIMPLE fix. It took so long to find the common-sense mechanic, however, that the down-shot of all of the surging tanked my tranny, which I had to have rebuilt! AND then, after I drove away from the 5-star AAA BBB "transmissing" shop, I found that THEY HAD NOT TIGHTENED ALL OF THE GROUND STRAPS! I took it back. They had no knowledge of ALL 9(?) ground straps and had to take it to THEIR mechanic who tightened them ALL down! It's been 5 years since then and I haven't had another problem with it. RULE OF THUMB: EVERY TIME YOU HAVE THE VAN SERVICED have them tighten-down ALL of the ground straps! If your mechanic doesn't know what you are talking about, go find a new mechanic. Generally, the AAA "Top Shops" are your best bet. They fix things right the FIRST time. I still haven't found a manual that has all of the ground straps listed, by the way.

You must remove the transmission pan, the filter is inside the transmission.

Sounds alot like the ignition sensor. In my old Chevys it was under the dist cap, mounted on the dist itself. Mine was flat, slightly curved rectangle shape, with two flat prongs coming out both sides. If it would get an internal break in it, you cant see it. I would have the same problem as you, part was only about $12. And comes out with unscrewing two screws.
Might want to give it a shot.

change the filter first. IF the pumpwas bad it wouldnt start at all. It could be going bad but the only way to really test it is to pull your gas tank and at that rate you may as well replace it.
you could have a clogged injector causing the lack of fuel as well. you can try injector cleaner, Lucas is my personal preference I use it at every fill-up. 4-6oz per tank of gas depending on your tank size.

Ethanol really causes problems in cars that sit around. Thanks for us going green huh?It decomposes non-metal parts in the gas system. If the car sits around for something like 6 weeks the gas does go bad.You have to siphon the tank as much as possible. When filling up,add octane boost first then gas.It still may not work though.I did all that for a scooter and it still didn't work.So if you try it,when you add gas, probably only use 4 or 5 gallons,so you don't waste too much money if it doesn't work, and it is enough to mix the octane boost fairly well.Good luck bro'!That's all i have for now.And gas is gas no matter where you buy it.All those additives the companies claim clean this or that is just sales.Since fuel injection came out, companies are required to add a certain amount of detergent to keep injectors clean anyways. And 93 octane is not better than 87 octane enough to pay 20 cents more per gallon.
