My service engine soon light came on 2003 gallant this morning while it was warming up. Is this a service notice that needs to be done or is it acutally the computer telling me something IS wrong?

  • sheilasweet Feb 23, 2009

I am very familiar with cars worked in the industry for 15 years so check engine light, I know that is most likely and emissins issue, its just the serice engine soon light is new to me, Ive never owned a car that had one of those. My main questions was answered I believe, distinguishing between service soon and check... self explanitory, but i needed a second opinion.

Service engine soon means an oil change and or manufactures mileage for a timing belt or other major service hence 'service engine soon' . A check engine light is when there is something wrong. So no need to worry just get an oil change when it tells you to.

  • Chuck Feb 23, 2009

i forgot to tell you that if you do your own oil changes you will need to reset this service light so it will remind you again when to change the oil at the specified mileage depending on your car. This procedure is in your manual how to reset this light.

  • Chuck Feb 23, 2009

if you have your manual it will show this. I am very familiar with newer cars and almost all foreign cars after 2001 have this service engine light. but like i said i am 110 percent positive about this. your car is safe to drive. (unless it is approaching your timing belt service mileage). usually from 75,000-100,000 miles you should change it. but double check your manual it should state this light and its function. i hope this helps and i dont blame you for a second opinion. reassurance

Look you should always take a service engine light seriuosly. its telling you something in your engine needs service. you can take it to any local autozone ect and they will scan it for free with a diagnostic tool and tell you what you need to do to fix it. it sprobably something a simple as a tune up you know oil change plugs and wires that is usually what causes that light to come on

SOURCE: my service engine soon light came on 2003 gallant

The Service Engine Soon light is a notice from the vehicles on-board computer that a problem has been detected somewhere, and service is required. You can isolate the problem by having the "trouble code" displayed for you at an auto parts store for FREE to determine the exact problem, and possible causes. This should be done FIRST, so that you strategically approach the problem directly instead of spending unnecessary money "guessing or assuming". If you are trying to save a few bucks, you may want to invest in a Chilton's manual for you vehicle as well for step-by-step repair, and diagnostic info specifically for your vehicle. I hope this helps,...and good luck!!

Hi Dennis
The light is warning you that there is a problem with the Engine management system, I cannot and no one else online can tell you what the problem is. But I can advise you to take your car to a workshop and have it scan, the technician will tell you.

Good luck

Heat not working and service engine light on

Many times no heat is the result of low coolant which means there isn't enough to properly flow through the heat core. Check the coolant level. If you're running hot it could also be from low coolant. If the coolant level is normal you may very well have a stuck thermostat. If you do have low coolant the next step is to find the reason why it's low.

Did you pull the codes yet?

Mitsubishi Outlander 2003 Service Engine Soon

You'll need to know why the service engine light comes on, they can check this by using a OBD II diagnostic tool to find the trouble code stored in the pcm, ask them to run a check on it, or you can take it to a mechanic before you buy it to have them check over the vehicle for any minor or major problems.

Oil pressure light stays on

It will take a while for the oil to circulate throughout the engine at that cold of a temperature. You may want to get an oil change done and make sure you have the proper oil for the temperatures. What happends is that the oil gets thicker and has a harder time circulating through the engine. BE VERY CAREFUL leaving the car run with the oil light on. You can blow the engine very quickly as I learned the hard way. Good luck to you and thanks for using FixYa!

Sincerely,

JC

My 2003 cts keeps turing off as soon as the car engine gets warm

Thi could be a crank sensor/ cam sensor problem. It could be a grounding problem or a variety of problems. Did the check engine light come on? If so, then get a scan done to identify the exact cause of the problem.
