I'm
having a real hard time with the electric power steering in my new 2009 Corolla LE. I think there is a real
problem with keeping this car going straight on the highway. You constantly
find yourself drifting off center, you make the slightest adjustment and the
car over-corrects. The steering is way to sensitive. It makes highway driving a
very tiresome activity.
I had this "problem" but there wasn't anything wrong with the car - it was just my driving...
The steering is just sensitive and "sporty" - try driving with a much lighter hand - even one hand, lower on the wheel. I now find the steering great and its actually very responsive.
It took 3 visits to Toyota before someone finally explained this to me but it works. People kept explaining that it "drives like a Corolla" but couldn't tell me how to drive it better.
Mind you the car is still horrible on windy days but I don't have same issues in normal highway driving.
A year ago I was actually renting cars for road trips instead of driving my 09 Corolla S I was that freaked out about the steering but I'm now completely comfortable driving the car. I do have to warn everyone that drives my car on the highway though...they never believe me at first but always concede that I'm right and that a light hand makes a huge difference.
I also have the same steering problem. I bet you it's similar to the gas accelerator problems. I see these complaints are about a year old and Toyota hasn't fixed the 2009 Toyota Corolla.
I own the corolla LE with navigation and perks. the steering on a windy day is pretty bad so of course you find yourself
re correcting. the electric steering is really responsive which is great. the 2009-2010 corolla was built with the autobon high way in mind. im pretty sure i spelled that wrong. if you drive your vehicle at high speeds like 65-75 around a curve you will see that your vehicle is very responsive. many times when it comes to steering because many people still hold the wheel at 10 and 2 your vehicle will respond differently where if you hold the wheel in the lower area.

Have them replace the EPS computer sensor.
My steering tries to almost steer me off the road at 65 mph. When I push it to 60 to 70 is when it goes nuts! I saw on youtube some people have video tape the problem and captured an accident, too.

Thanks everyone that helped. I found there are many complaints with the steering. I kinda have it fixed but it cost about $1000 and Toyota didn't cover the cost. Dang.. It's a 2009 Corolla and only 2 weeks old. Shame on Toyota Corp :( If there is a recall I am going to give them the bill.
