Close all your windows and doors and make sure the radio is off. Turn the key to ignition (on) but dont crank it. You should hear the fuel pump spin up below the rear seats if its a 4 door or from the trunk area if 2 door. If you don't hear any sounds, than your fuel pump is gone. I do agree with the other solution that the fuel pump is ruined, though I would just test to make sure.
One more test that you could do is test the fuel pump relay. It's located in the fuse box in the trunk (left side). Remove the relay and jump pins 30 and 85 with a small wire or paperclip and turn the key to the 'on' position. You should hear the pump turn on. If you do, the relay's bad. If you don't, the pumps bad.
Ruined fuel pump when the gas ran out
Needs fuel to lube it,strange as it sounds
& to cool it
SOURCE: I have a 2000 grand am and I ran it out of gas. I put gas in it.
look for the fule rail on top of the motor there should be a release looks like a tire vavle stem push that in and see if you can get fuel to come out that should purge your fuel system if that doesnt work then your fuel pump may have gone out
