Yes, get the tank as close to empty as possible and then raise the car up as high as possible you will need at least 2 and a half to 3 feet off the ground to get the tank to clear the car body. been there done that.

i own a 89 cougar and ive been there done that, using two car ramps and two jack stands, my car has a 18 gallon tank even with 3 gallons of fuel in it, the tank is akward to handle, having someone to help is a good thing to have. get yourself a haynes manual #1725 and read about it first. see if you can do it by yourself. if not take it to a shop to do.

How can I get access to replace fuel pump?

You will need to pump the fuel from the fuel tank using a fluid evacuator and then the fuel tank will need to be dropped to access the in tank fuel pump.

You will find a few descriptions on how to do this on the internet such as this one.................

How do I remove the fuel pumps on 2005 thunderbird

Most of the newer vehicles have the fuel pump inside the gas tank. If so, you will have to 'drop' the tank to get to the pump.

Need help replacing fuel pump. 1996 ford thunderbird lx. 3.8 can't locate how to remove gas tank.

Disconnect the battery & any fuel lines you can and the same with electrical connectors first of all. Drain the tankwith a siphon pump if 3 gallons or more of fuel is present. It gets heavy to replace back in and dangerous too.. Have the tank supported now & remove the bolts from the tanks mounting straps. Drop the tank down about 6 inches and check for other connection that need to be removed
RFemove the center retainer to remove the fuel pump with the sending unit
I would replace both items since it is an older car and also replace the filter sock to the pump too
Reverse this procedure to install

Fuel pump went out in 1994 thunderbird i need to know if there is an access panel or if i have to drop the tank?

If you have a carburetor then it will be on the side of your motor....if you have fuel injection, it is in the fuel tank. You have to drop the fuel tank.

Replace fuel pump in a 1986 ford thunderbird

  • hi sir how are you
  • . I believe the pump is in the tank, but it's verry easy to remove. Open the tank lid and remove the bolts on the plate around the filler tube. Dosconnect all the fuel and vent hoses and lift the plate straight up. the pump, filter and assembly are on the bottom of the **** tube. They will all come out in one piece.
