Low idle, also engine runs alittle ruff after fill-up.

We have a Hyundia Elantra 2002. The past few months after a fill up for a few miles the engine runs ruff at idle. Also the Idle has been around 400-500 rpm in gear with the brake on. We had it to the dealer and it shows nothing on the computer. They also checked the charcol filter from the gas tank vent and that appears ok. What do you think. I've now been using some gas additives and a Shell type gasoline... Thank You, Bob

Sounds like the fuel pump is starting to go, the problem after fill up is most always related to a failing pump. The other issue may be a dirty throttle valve.

SOURCE: how do you get rotor off 2003 hyundia elantra

hi from uk not sure if same as uk hyundai's but here goes ? if you remove wheel do you see two countersunk posi screws between studs that appear to hold rotor ?? if so then you will have to first remove the brake caliper assy by unbolting from the rear of caliper two 13 mm spanner/socket ? then you remove the two bolts that secure the carrier that the caliper bolts to 17 mm spanner/socket now you can remove the two contersunk screws then you may have to tap the rotor off the hub from rearuse a wire brush to clean up/away all rust/dust from caliper and carrier assys b4 refitting (take precautions from breathing dust) i assume you are fitting new pads ?? reassemble carrier then b4 fitting pads smear a light coating of copper grease on the rear of pad (metal side ) this prevents squealing on brakes then fully reassemble then b4 fitting wheel? bleed the brakee caliper a couple of pumps should expel dirty fluid then fit wheel carry out same proceedure on other brake assy as above fully then b4 you move car pump brake to ensure pedal is firm you will find that bleeding brakes will make pedal firmer as the old fluid becomes compressable due to heat/moisture absorbsion over time and heat from brakes is transferred to fluid via caliper piston understand?? that is why alway policy to bleed/flush brake fluid at least two yr interval this reduces spongy brake pedal hope this is all clear 4 you to follow best wishes for new year and hope you update on how you go on??

SOURCE: 2001 HYUNDIA ELANTRA AUTO TRANS THE TRANS

You really need a test drive by a tech. Any shop should be able to do that and give you a firm (written) estimate. It might not be a big deal. Shop around if you need a rebuild, If you need one, ask about their warranty. Believe it or not, a good reference for a tranny shop is the Used Car Manager at the Hyundai dealership. Go in to ask him, not over the phone, and be nice. You're asking for a favor after all. Many dealers do a lot of their work outside the store for reasons of cost. It all depends on the dealership. One will, one won't. Ask.

SOURCE: 2002 hyundai elantra gls . low idle speed, check

Did the 'Check Engine' Light come ON? Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE and perhaps eventually fix the problem.

Maybe check the connector to the IAC

Post #4:
"Great news, the car is FIXED! I had to break down and take it into a dealer because I was getting over my head with sensors and electrical mumbo jumbo. Also, I the car had two recalls out that needed to be taken care of.

At a total cost to me of $52.78 I now have a perfectly idling car. It turns out that the connector to the IAC was bad. The dealer didn't charge for the part, and they only charged the minimum cost for a diagnosis. I was sure going into it that I would be paying several hundred dollars for a new IAC and a few hours of labor, but that was not the case. I actually would deal with the Hyundai dealer here again, and I'm not a big fan of dealerships. Now the car runs great, and once I change the clutch this weekend, she will be running good as new. "

I have 2002 audit quattro TT with 180k miles. When I do a normal acceleration the car surges and rpm drop but pick back up. If I accel hard it runs fine. Also at idle at times it varies 200 rpm like a

this sounds similar to a problem i had. as the rpm went over 2000 the engine would stop for a split second and then kick back in.
after a few days looking my garage finally found the problem was a faulty air mass meter.
this cost me £200 in total to be repaired.

Low Idle, also shaky engine after fill up

you have to mention the make and model that is being tested
there are codes but if it is a GM product many scan tools will not read the faults because it requires a scan tool with a special protocol for GM
if it is a nissan , the ECM has a small screw that has to be turned to get the codes to read
The car is playing so rest assured there are fault codes but who ever is doing the reading is using the wrong scanner or is not familiar with your make of car requirements

It only idles ruff during park or idle

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
