Ignition Timing

  1. set timing after replacing distributor - sxv~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Parking brake control should be applied.
Depress the parking brake pedal, and warm the engine to the normal operating temperature.
  2. Turn off all electrical loads.
  3. Start the engine and rev it to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to the idle.
  4. Check the idle speed. The idle speed should be between 700-800 rpm in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) position.
  5. NOTE: Make sure that the timing pointer is pointing to the 15° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) mark on the crankshaft pulley. Each notch on the crankshaft pulley represents 5 degrees.
Check the ignition timing with a timing light.
  6. If the marks are not aligned, loosen the distributor bolt and turn the distributor to make the adjustment. The ignition timing should be between 13°-17° BTDC.

There is no other way other than to remove the engine.I now its a lot of work but if you want to do the job properly then thats the way to do it.You can remove the gearbox and try.I think thats a waist of time good luck.

The distributor on my husbands 99 Nissan Quest stopped turning. I'm guessing that it is broken. Is this expensive to replace

most likely timing belt failed.this turns camshafts which in turn rotate distributor.fotunately for you ford insisted nissan make this a non interference engine during their joint venture with mercury villager.so no internal damage should have occurred.im guessing about 700.00 to replace timing belt, water pump and drive belts.

99 nissan quest p0301, I replaced the sparkplugs already and im still having the same code, whats could it be?

Pretty sure this engine has a distributor. Could be a bad ignition wire, cap or rotor. Pick up all 3 and change em out. Pretty cheap fix. Check ebay and put in "nissan quest ignition". Or take a trip to autozone carquest etc... If your engine had coil packs and not a distributor, it is usually a bad pack. Good luck

I have a 99 nissan quest. I bought it a couple of weeks ago. I drove it from the place i bought it and it drove really really good. I pressure washed the engine, after that, the engine has been misfiring...

That pressure washing can and probably has damaged a sensor under your hood, but I doubt that a bad knock sensor would cause misfiring. Check your other sensors, lots of them on that engine.

I have a 1999 nissan quest and need to change the distributor. How is the timing set after the distributor is replaced?

This is late but may be useful for info purposes. The 1999 Nissan Quest carries a distributor and spark plug wires. Many owners complain having to go through numerous distributors. I went through 2 in one year with only 68K miles.

'95 nissan quest stalled at a stop. Will not start, only cranks

I worked on a '93 Quest last year. Couldn't find out why it wouldn't start. It was the distributor shaft not held onto its rotating gear. The roll pin had come out of the gear on the end of the distributor shaft. When the distributor cap was off, the rotor was turning with the shaft while the engine was cranking. So I thought that was okay. But when I put my finger on the rotor and it stopped turning, that is when I found out the problem. It's a stretch, but maybe the techs missed it. Take the cap off, and if you can spin the rotor either way just by hand, the distributor gear has come loose.

Looks like they really covered a lot. I suppose next they will you to replace the ecu. Good luck.
