1997 Lincoln Continental Suspension Conversion Problem

I just finished converting my rear air suspension to a passive suspension system using Strutmasters kit. At the same time, I replaced the electronic sensing shocks with passive shocks. The car drives fine and the rear end no longer sags. I then went through the steps to disable the air ride suspension (cut and tape pink wire with light blue stripe, cut and tape tan wire with orange stripe, cut and ground light green wire with black stripe, and splice light blue wire with yellow stripe to VDM ignition power wire (purple wire with orange stripe)). Before I did so, the compressor ran continuously, and the check air ride and check traction messages came on. After I did so, the compressor no longer runs, and the check air ride message went away. However, the check traction control message stayed and the new problem is that my ABS light is now on continuously. The car drives fine, the steering is fine, and the brakes work fine. Any suggestions?

Ooops! The next time I drove the car after I posted my question the compressor ran for about two minutes after I started driving. Everything else was accurate. Sorry.

Sorry it took me so long to respond, but life got busy and I hadn't checked the site recently. The issue turned out to be bad instructions from Strutmasters. They had instructed me to cut the wire running from the wheel speed sensor to the antilock brake control module (the light green and black wire). Once I reconnected it, everything was fine. The switch in the trunk did turn off the compressor but did not get rid of the error codes until I respliced the wire. So, thanks for your suggestion, but a continuity tester and wiring diagrams from ALLDATAdiy.com allowed me to get it done. Thanks again.

It could be a wheel speed sensor that went out or something... When working with the wiring, something could have just gotten crossed or tapped to get these codes as well. The compressor shouldnt be running anymore if everything was tied off properly. Take it in somewhere and have the codes cleared and that should fix the problem hopefully. I know AutoZone has a reader, but I do not know if they have they ability to clear the codes.
I hope this helps.

Already converted from rear air bags suspension to non air.. but now my steering isn't right. what can that be?

Probably something to do with ride height settings in computer trying to compensate for some reason, do you still have front air bag suspension? You could try removing fuse for suspension.

1994 continental. air ride. compressor starts and rear starts to lift, but after 3-4 mins. i get a beep and light on dash says ride control and then she squats in the rear?

When I got my 1994 Continental, it had already been converted back to a coil-spring suspension, and the air-ride system was GONE. You will find that is the case with most of the ones that are still on the road. The air-ride system turned out to be an unreliable, trouble-prone, nightmare for most owners....and it was cheaper to scrap it and go back to after-market coils, than what it was to have a Lincoln dealer fix it. Looks like you're destined to join the club....If you decide you want to have it fixed, and make the car driveable, be prepared to PAY for it.

Can not get the new air ride compressor to come on

Make sure the trunk switch is turned on. Your doorjam and trunk switches are wired into the Air-ride. They must sense the openings are closed before the lift compressor will work.

There are level controls for height. If the car was put on a lift without the switch being turned off, the positioner may be stretched beyond working.

1994 lincoln continental executive rear end goes down when the car is parked few hours.

When the key is off, the air suspension shouldn't lose any air, so you could have a valve leak in the system. I'm not familiar with all the components of the system, but did you check the valve that allows the system to bleed off pressure for leaks when the system is turned off?

Can i put coil springs from a 1995 taurus onto a 1995 continental

No. they are different platforms and could result in a serious accident. they make conversion kits to eliminate the air ride suspension and are designed specifically for this particular car.

I just purchased a 1997 lincoln continental and the rear suspension deflates at night but when it is started in the morning,it reflates. Is this normal?

it should deflates only at trim height and shld stay at that level considering that there is no leak on the rear air suspension. Most probably leaking rear air suspension is the problem. The system works up to 45 minutes only after ignition off and will maintain the trim height

I have a 97 MKVIII with a mal-functioning  air suspension system. Parked on level ground the front end suspension depresses overnite. and upon starting it comes back up in the morning. It sometimes will...

leaks can be difficult to find in these systems. They could be in the air springs themselves, the air lines etc... not to mention you could have a ride height sensor that is malfunctioning or the control module. A lot of people are converting these old cars from the air ride suspension system to a standard passive coil spring conversion. A high quality, powder coated, American steel coil spring is DESIGNED to last the LIFETIME of the vehicle. http://www.strutmasters.com offers conversion kits with a lifetime warranty so youwon't have to worry about your suspension again. Give them a shot.. it definately beats the dealer price of around $1200 to fix your air ride.
