Oxygen sensor location on a 2003 Saturn Ion-1

My check engine light came on in my 2003 Saturn Ion-1 and indicated a problem with my oxygen sensor. Where is the oxygen sensor located and is there more than 1? If so, how do I determine which is the bad one?

One is front of the cat, and one after the cat of the exhaust.
The OBD Scanner should tell you which bank is producing the error.
Bank one is the front one.

How do you change the downstream oxygen sensor in a 2003 saturn ion?

Downstream O2 sensor is the O2 sensor after the Catalytic converter. Jack the car off the ground so you can get under it, disconnect the wire leads and with a close end wrench. Snake the wire leads through and wrench and place the wrench one the O2 sensor and with a hammer, tap the wrench to break lose the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe. Once the O2 sensor has loosen up, just remove and install the new O2 sensor. Reconnect the wire leads, start the car and listen for any exhaust leaks. Once no leak has been determined, Place car back on the ground and go for test drive. Check engine light should go off after three start up and car has reached it's operating temperature and DTC codes will be erased after 100start cycle. Good luck and be safe.

How to replace oxygen sencer for 2006 saturn ion

Installation Removal & Installation
  1. Remove the heat shield.
  2. Note the routing of the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical harness.
  3. Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector.
  4. Using a suitable Oxygen sensor socket remove the sensor.
To install:

NOTE A special anti-seize compound is used on the HO2S threads. The compound consists of a liquid graphite and glass beads. The graphite will burn away but the glass beads will remain, making the sensor easier to remove. New or service sensors already have the compound applied to the threads. If the sensor is removed and is to be reinstalled, the threads must be coated with an anti-seize compound before reinstallation.

  1. If reinstalling the old HO2S, coat the threads with anti-seize compound.
  2. Carefully install the HO2S to the pipe. Tighten the sensor to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) on the sensor located at exhaust manifold, or 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) for the rear oxygen sensor.
  3. Attach the sensor electrical connections.

Ned to replace oxygen sensor bank 1 upstream need to know where it is in the car

Up stream O2 sensors are always before the convertor. Check the exhaust manifold, if you have a V6 you may have two, make sure you know which one is bad.
