Hi I need help with my 2004 Freelander TD4: suddenly blue/white smoke coming out the back of the car ( the car did not over heated the heat gauge was at normal position) notes that there was oil leaking everywhere and that there was oil in the coolant water tank as well, suspect head gasket blown Removed the head, no indication of a blown head gasket, send the head in for testing. Pressure test 100%, so put new head gasket and head bolts, replace oil filter and oil. Start the car and after a while same problem, So I suspect the oil cooler leaking, To check this I blanked off the oil cooler to test it, then it was worse. Now I am loss please help is the block faulty?

Cracked block. once it heats up the crack gets bigger and the oil gets thinner which makes more oil burn. run car without the oil cap on and see if lots of air/ oil comes out if so thats blow by and you need a new engine.

Thanks for your feedback but I idle the car with the water cap and the oil cap off and I do not see any pressure from the oil cap but the water bottle fills up and over flow and when I switch off the opposite happens water back in to the oil.

SOURCE: 2002 freelander coolant leak

My coolant leaked out and on top there is a large hard plastic container, I had to replace it, that stopped my coolant leak.

SOURCE: Coolant overflowing out of expansion tank no boil no steam

As you've stated driving around town it's fine, and everything is working well. For the symptoms, there are 2 possible causes:
1. Your cooling fans are not working.
2. Your radiator needs to be replaced.
I'm sure you can determine which it is, and I wish you luck on your repair.

SOURCE: oil in water resovour vw 2002 passat

Could be just the OIL COOLER. VW IS CORRECT.
If the oil cooloer fails internely you will have a mix of coolant and oil. In the engine and in the Radiator,

But not to say the other guys were wrong...

White smoke and engine cutting out

It sounds like the cylinder head gasket, or even a cracked head. You must go back to the repair shop.

I've a freelander td4 yr04 just had it a month and it's starting to judder some times shucking black smoke out when apply more power and theres a rattling noise

Faulty Injector or timing

If the injector is not spraying correctly you will be burning neat diesel out of the exhaust.

The effect of one cylinder missing will make the judder

If you bought it from a dealer take it back if you bought it off the street find a good fitter

2004 Landrover Freelander stop/reverse light fuse keeps blowing

I had a persistent problem of hill light warning and TCS warning lights coming on for no apparent reason. There is a wire connection between the stop light switch and the control unit to let the system know when brakes are being applied. Changing the stop light switch cured it. The replaced switch was certainly sticking and the new one was of a different design. Replaced it myself as switch comes with a wiring loom. Need to get on your back under the steering wheel! Not very expensive. My car 2001 TD4
