Subaru vibration 96 subaru legacy 180000 miles.car has a driveline vibration ,not extreme, but worse on hills and acceleration. at 70 mph going up a long grade this vibration suddenly got catastropic- like so bad you feel all 4 wheels are square and falling off.after pulling over and finding nothing visably wrong, wheels tight,no flats[car has brand new tires] I crippled 20 miles home at 30 mph .vibration was bad even this slow .axles have been replaced, wheel bearings are good no noise or play.could it be the center bearing on the non -reparable -expensive as hell -driveshaft?

  • rike8 Apr 16, 2009

Same Problem. '98 Outback wtih 180k, vibration sets up at highway speeds 60+ while accelerating (ok while coasting). Just spend $900 on front calipers, roters and pads - no improvement.

I had similar problem with my '99 outback. Replaced the front half shafts and seemed much better. A few months later seemed to be comming back so replaced the driver side shaft again and the problem disappeared. I had put in rebuilt shafts and the driver side shaft was not rebuilt correctly.

Check the center driveshaft u-joints

  • Anonymous Dec 08, 2010

six states sells driveline assemblys from the transmission to the rear axel for 360.00 new replaceable u-joints and balanced driveline. They probably need your driveline as a core I think the core charge was 60 bucks. Six States Ogden Utah. That was the price on a 1996 legacy should be similar. If the 18 has replaceable u-joints the cost would be much less

If you just put the tires on, I would say that it is most likely they are out of balance. It is not unheard of for the "speedy tire change" places to neglect to balance your tires.

1992 subaru legacy (manual transmission) accelerating problems

Manual transmission subarus have a 'hill holder' feature that is part of the braking system; when you stop on a slight incline, engage the clutch, and step on the brake at the same time, you can take your foot off the brake and the car will not roll backwards. When you go to accelerate and release the clutch the hill holder disengages and allows normal operation.
I suspect that this feature was somehow altered when your brake service was performed. It's activated via a cable that is tied to your clutch cable; the hill holder cable toggles a switch on a mechanism that applies brake fluid to one (or two, depending on model year) brake calipers. I'd start here. If you google hill holder you should find some diagrams of what I'm speaking.
I had a 1995 Legacy with this feature; I disabled when it began malfunctioning. Took 20 minutes as the bolt is in a difficult location but immediately noticed it was much easier to depress the clutch pedal.
Oh yes, my malfunction was so bad (and improperly diagnosed by the local brake 'specialists') that the brakes would lock up while driving and I couldn't move the car! I destroyed my left front brake caliper before figuring out the culprit on my own.

Hope it's an easy fix whatever it is!

Just bought it....seems to run fine, no over-heating or smoking, 232000 miles...paid 400 bucks...owner says it is a daily driver, even occacional long distance driver.......no problems....my test drive,...

Try changing the fuel filter. If it's been there awhile it's probably starting to clog and won't be able to flow enough fuel for the heavier demands the car has when going uphill or trying to accelerate hard.

96 subaru legacy, engine light comes on, has code P0304 #4 missfire, this only happens once in a while, going up a slight hill or a long hill, I have driven from seattle to portland and back with car loaded...

I fought with similar problem on my sub for a couple years. Had both a sub dealer and ind mechanic check. Spent lots of money but it still happened. Eventually I solved it by replacing vacuum hoes and putting clamps on them. Seems it was a slight vacuum leak. Worse under load (going uphill) and especially when cold.

Driveline vibration 2007 Ford Fusion AWD

Has the car even been in an accident? If so it could be a bent frame (worse case), Otherwise the car could be off balance and needing an alignment (Most likely - best case) :)
