Hi Joe, Two things I would check that are very common, the igniter inside the distributor, and the main relay up under the dash on the drivers side. The main relay is a small brown box about the size of a half stick of butter, I believe it has an 8 pin connector.
Here is a quick check on the main relay. when you turn the ignition on, usually you will hear a hum for 4 sec and then click off, if you don't hear the hum and click, 99.9% sure it's the main relay, if you hear it, it's probably the igniter. Let me know if that helps, thanks.

wow. a lot of bad information on this site. Refer to a manual for the proper torque sequence. The civic I believe is a two step torque procedure. First 22 ft lbs, than 53 ft lbs.

It could be that your syncro for the reverse gear is gone. Which would have to be brought to a tranny shop not a do it your self type of job.

This is for PGM-IG ignition coil type, there is also electronic ignition igniter on the distributor type.
