Not too bad. Just remove the Wheel and the Brake Calipers. Then remove the Dust Cap off the Center of the Rotor. Inside there is a Bolt with a Cotter Pin In it. Remove the Cotter Pin and the Bolt. The Rotor will now Slide off the Spindle, The Bearings are Loose and Probably inside the Rotor. Remove these Bearings and get a Tube of High Temp Grease. Put a Big gobb of grease in the Palm of your hand and Roll the Bearing around in your Hand. Be sure to use your Fingers on the Inside of the Bearings to get it in. The same Goes with New Bearings.

Best solution to your problem is going ot the junk yard asking them for a left front knuckle. They will charge you about the same price for all this stuff as the auto parts store will charge you for a wheel bearing. After you have this knuckle you will be able to take a few things off of it and be able to put it on with only remvoing like 3-5 bolts.

2x2 = nothing special since they are old fashion tapered bearings

4x4 = nothing special again BUT the wheel bearing is part of the hub assembly!

2003 Merc Mountaineer AWD Grinding coming from left front tire. Tires, brakes, rotors all less than a year old, could it be a hub/bearing assembly or something different? Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
Looks like a wheel bearing issue. If the wheel bearing is worn out you can expect a grinding sound. Wheel bearing replacement is strongly recommended.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
