If it were mine, the first things I'd do would be to clean the carb or jets, whichever, put a new air filter in, dump a can of Sea Foam in a full gas tank, give it a new gas filter. Could be your thermostat is sticking a bit.
The rest of the car is fine? Maybe you have a dash going bad. I have a 2004 silverado that had the same problem, lost all guages, etc. They had to put in a new panel, there was a recall for it at the time and was covered way past warranty period. They had a problem with solder joints. Please rate my answer so I am rewarded points for it.
The problem needs to be properly diagnosed, but the most likely cause of your problem would be a malfunctioning fuel level sensor in the fuel tank. It could also possibly be a problem with the wiring to the sensor.
your problem is definately in the fuel sending unit..thats all it can be, either that or the float arm is losing contact on the slider... thats all it can be.
Have it scanned and look for codes first, but then fuel trim, O2, and MAS air flow readings. I'm going to guess it's running lean and you have an air leak in the throttlebody.
Not a current owner, but knowing Cadillac, that may be the way they meant for you to think of the fuel. How many miles till refill. Maybe that made it easier to swallow the high priced, too frequent fill-ups! I'll ask my friend, he's got a '99.
