My 1999 chevy blazer will only start when primed and then after it sits for a hour or so it wont start again. it runs fine when running, but when it first starts it has black smoke and oil coming from the tail pipe for a minute or so then levels out. the fuel pump is kicking on and we changed the filter. we dont smell gas coming from the engine.
Black smoke is usually extra fuel, but you say you are priming it to start so that could be why.
Have you checked fuel pump pressure before and after cranking ?
It the fuell pump look for the pression when you turn the key .end check the sill on valve moteur for your smoke maybe check your pump fuel whit a test lite if you have short i think it was that mike66

try replacing the fuel regulator,or is the oil cap on tight?the fuel regulator works on base vacumm
SOURCE: engine wont start without priming with gas first, then runs well
i have the same problem on a 98 jimmy 4.3 4x4.
i replaced the fule pump and have good pressure.
new wiers & coil (good spark) no MIL & no codes.
will only start when primed. it will run & drive all day
with no problems.
but once it has been turned off (warm or cold) i will
have to prime it once again to start it.
i have another engine that was in it before it spun a bearing.
it ran fine so i know all parts are good.
i swaped the mass air flow and throttle body but i still have
to prime it everytime to start it. am i forgetting something?
should i swap out the intake with the injectors?
any help would be sweet. thanks.

Try to do the crank relearn:
Ensure that your battery is fully charged before attempting the relearn procedure. Do not leave any battery charger or jumper cables attached to the battery. Close the hood completely. Some applications require that the doors remain closed during the procedure.
96-99 S10
1. Rotate the key to the start position to attempt to start the vehicle (the vehicle will not start).
Allow the key to return to the all position (same as if the vehicle would have started). The theft system light will flash (or stay lit) on the dash for approximately 10 minutes.
2. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns oft) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt tostart the vehicle. The vehicle should start on this cycle.
3. Once the vehicle is running, the password relearn is complete.
00 + S10

2. The theft system light will flash (or stay lit) on the dash for approximately 10 minutes.
3. When the theft system telltale stops flashing (or turns off) turn the key to the off position for 5 seconds and then attempt to start the vehicle.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes.
5. On the next cycle of turning the ignition key from off to crank the vehicle should start
6. Once the vehicle is running, the password is learned and this completes the cycle.
7. Clear any DTC's with a scan tool if necessary. DTC history will be cleared after 100 ignition cycles.
Thank you for using fixya and keep me posted, be glad to help you get your jimmy running 100%

probably not fuel filter . probably going to have to remove the upper intake and replace the fuel injector spider(fuel inj assebly) if it is droping fuel pressure it is leaking into the upper manifold

I just replaced the fuel pressure regulator and now I am hearing a vibrating noise from the fuel line under the truck. What do you think the problem is.
