Runs fine after driving for awhile but smokes when started and takes a while to shift years - it's an automatic
Check trans. fluid level while engine is hot and running, Check it twice to be sure that the level is full. The white smoke could be something all together different like a blown head gasket. check to see if water is mixing with the iol by looking at the oil fill cap, if you see bubbles and a whitish milky looking color under the cap.

valve seals could be worn out letting oil get into the combustion chamber making that white smoke.if you have alot of miles of miles on your engine it just be time for a rebuild or replacement
SOURCE: Rough idle until warm 22r
if it is a carburated engine it is probably the a.a.p. diaphragm in the carb. if you remove the air cleaner and look on the side of the carb that is towards the valve cover near the front yow will see a vacuum hose going to a cover that is fastened with 3 screws. if you pull the vacuum line off you will see that there is probably fuel being sucked into the line due to the leaking diaphragm. the vacuum source is temp controlled and cuts off when warm. but when cold sucks fuel directly into the intake. remove the 3 screws to replace the diaphragm, being carefull of the spring. good luck!

Blue smoke means oil is being burned
do a compression check

The valve seals could be going bad. You can try a little thicker oil for the time being.(10w-30). But the valve seals should be replaced. If that is what the problem is. The headgasket could also be seaping a little coolant into the cylinder.
What color is the smoke? If the smoke is white, your camry could have a bad head gasket. Blue smoke, valve stem seals.
SOURCE: exhaust blowing white grey smoke lots of it and
The white/grey smoke is steam (water). (from the cooling system)The engine has either blown a head gasket or there is a crack on the engine block.
Stop as soon as safely practical at home or wherever you will work on it.
Before you spend lots of money, try an engine block sealer, less than $15. Bar's Block Seal, for example. Read and follow directions carefully. You may need to apply twice. May also last for a couple of months or several years.
Otherwise, replace head gasket on affected side and/or replace engine (block).
