Sounds like a belt let go, but other items could come in to play here, such as. : Seized idler pulley, seized alternator, etc. Obviously you need to have it checked out. Did you notice if engine overheated, that would be the one that would worry me.
Ya, that doesn't sound good, but here's to hoping it was just a belt & no extensive damage was done. Don't drive it, have it towed to a trusted repair shop for diagnosis & estimate for repairs.

The temperature gage was all the way to the right and smoke was coming from under the hood. My friend was ddriving behind me and said that he saw something from under my car come flying out...

You lost the belt in-stole new belt and everything will work all the best.
