SOURCE: 1987 Chevy G20 van replace power steering pump

Does your van have the serpentine belt? If so maybe I can help, I replaced the Power steering pump on my 90 G20 a couple of weeks ago. The trick is that you need to pull the pump pulley which is pressed on to access the mounting bolts which attach the pump to the engine. Harbor Freight tools sells a great tool designed for this job for $20.00. Once you have the correct tools, remove the serpentine drive belt. You may also need to remove the fan shroud. the pump shaft looks like it has an allen socket in the center, but this is for use in the manufacturing process, and will not come out. Place the puller tool on the pulley following tthe instruction that come with the tool, and remove the pulley. loosen, but do not remove the nut on the high pressure hose connection. use a pair of **** pliers to cut and remove the crimp clamp on the low pressure hose. If your pump has the remote reservour loosen the clamp on the reservour hose also. Remove the three mounting bolts, place a large pan under the pump to catch drips, and remove the prevously loosened hoses. there will be fluid leaking all over and the pump should come free, There are two types of replacement pump sold. With and without reservour. This reservour is a metal cover that fits over the back of the pump, and should not be confused with the reomte revervour found on some newer models which is next to the battery. This reservour is held in place be two throught the pump bolts which are removed at the back of the pump. If your new pump has a reservour you will probably still need to remove these bolts and put them in the replacement pump as most are shiped without these bolts. If you replacement pump comes without a reservour pull the bolts, the reservour should pull off of the old pump and slide onto the new one. check the o rings and replace the through the pump bolts. Installation is the reverse of removal execpt that 1/2" hose clamps replace the crimp clamps on the low pressure hose, and the puller tool is set up differently to replace the pulley. Finally if you don't flush contaminants out of the system your repair will last maybe a week. www.cardone.com has a great article about power steering flushing, read it before you start Good luck.

if the fittings aren't different sizes to help you out, it will be the fitting furthest from the frame, closest to the rad. or engine. all gm trucks are like this.

SOURCE: how do i bleed air from power steering pump from

Vehicle cold. Power Steering pump full to the Cold mark. Power Steering cap on. Start the vehicle, turn the wheels hard left, (When it touches the wheel stop, and you hear a groan, don't hold it there!), then turn the wheels hard right. Do this a number of times. 6 to 7.
Vehicle off. Wait two minutes, then check the fluid level. Reinstall the cap, drive the vehicle around.

Sometimes it's real hard to get the air out. I have had some vehicles that I did the above, then had to let them sit overnight. The next morning I drove the vehicle again, and finally all the air was worked out.

My power steering pulley has begun to back off the pump shaft on my 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Duramax 6.6. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you replace?

Sounds like bearing is the problem but check all the other components driven from the same belt are sitting straight

OBDII Codes 2006 Chevy 2500HD w/ 6.6L Duramax "Truck started losing power when warm, when cold for the first 10 miles or so the trunk runs great."

You need a dealer, there is a real problem going on here, way over the head of any home do it yourselfer. The main reason is the special tools required to interface with the control modules that are throwing these codes

I have a 2006 chevy silverado with a 6.6 litre diesle that has what i think is a power steering fluid leak up at the master cylander or break booster on the fire wall the hoses run from the power steering...

The Duramax trucks by Chevy and GMC use Hydro-Boost brakes, meaning that they use a hydrolic pump for the brakes and the steering. GM has had real trouble with leaky Hydrlic hoses on all their trucks for a few years (like my truck) for leaking coolant lines from the trans and as I found out today during my oil change, coming from the hydro-boost. These are replacable, but not under warrenty for you or me.

Press on brake and stering locks up

Steering locking up is not normal. You have a hydro-boost assist power steering system on your vehicle. It uses the power steering pump to apply hydraullic pressure to assist in braking. The hydro-boost system may have a problem, pressure or restriction problem. Have dealer check booster and current updates to check valves, there may be a service bulletin for your concern.
Hope this helps.

Power steering and brake line location2002 Chevy Silverado 2500HD

the power steering lines are very short hoses approximately 8 inches long that go from the power steering pump down to the steering box, which is located on the frame, just below the pump. The brake lines run from the master cylinder(where you fill it with fluid on the drivers side firewall) down to the frame, and then follow the frame both directions; both to the front end and the rear end, along the drivers side frame rail, just on the inside of it. The fuel line runs along the same path to the rear.

2002 GMC 2500HD Duramax No power brakes or power steering

TEST the vacuum pump. Both systems are run by it. Pressure should be at least 10psi right out of pump at 1000 rpm.
P.S. If pressure varies more than about 4 psi as the rpm vary the pump is failling.
