1987 Toyota Camry. Idle doesn't drop. Stays very high. No clue why. Also goes through a lot of gas and found out muffler and catalytic converter aren't hooked up. Ideas of where to start?

Hello Rodney, If you notice a lack of flow from you tail pipe when you increase the engines RPM or a lack of power when stepping on the gas while driving you may have a plugged catalytic converter, muffler or a obstruction in a exhaust pipe. If you have any doubts after checking the above, get it into a shop to be tested...plugged exhaust systems can cause excessive heat build up and damage your engines exhaust valves.

your catalytic converter may be clogged, if it is bolted on loosen the bolts and pry it away then try to start. if the power returns then you need to replace the catalytic converter. also is it an automatic or standard transmission? If automatic the torque converter is stalling at to low of rpm and needs to be replaced.

Before all this work was performed and money spent on parts, was the PCM checked for any DTC's?? If so, what was the read out?

That year S-10 had a lot of caburator problems and vaccum leaks . Check vaccum leak's first then Check you ilde control curcuit inside the caburator the idle jets may be clogged you also have a idle control set screw that can be adjusted to set the idle higher.

If the noise sounds like your muffler, but isn't coming from the area of your muffler, then you have an exhaust leak upstream from the muffler.

From the front of your muffler, follow the tubing forward to the catalytic converter, then forward to the engine exhaust manifold.

If you start with the car sitting for a few hours to make sure it's cold, you can use your hand to feel for blowing leaks while the engine is running, but chances are you'll be able to hear it. be careful of the catalytic converter itself, as it heats up fast, so check that first.

Once you've found the leak, the fix depends on the emissions laws in your state. If you have none, and the leak is in the middle of the pipe, you can buy pipe patchers (metal preferred) through auto parts stores or catalogs/websites. If you have strict emissions laws, or the leak is at the junction of the catalytic converter and pipe, you'll need to replace the failing part.

Lots of times the idle air control valve gets stuck on these engines. You can try cleaning it. Remove the air intake hose from the throttle body. Start the engine and spray throttle plate cleaner through the hole in the bottom on the throttle body. This will run the cleaner through the idle air control valve. make sure to keep the RPM's at about 2000 to 2500 throughout this procedure. You may need to install a new idle air control valve if it continues to happen.

i have a 1990 toyota camry, it is overheated very fast, its catalytic converter is clogged and i drilled a few holes in it to let some of that stuff out to let it generate right, but it is not wanting to stay crankedand when the engine gets to a certain temperature, the sound of the engine changes and if you hit the gas all it does is shake and you hear a pinging sound in the engine and when you cut it off it wont crank again until it cools all the way back down

Have you tryed ajusting your carb choke?
