Okay .. had the EXACT same problem - word for word .. turns out, that my positive battery cable was corrodid badly.. the ignition switch wasnt getting any power or signal - so it didnt know the trans was in park, so it locked the key in place... and all power cut off obviously because no juice was going thru the cable.
Apparently however.. you will get almost the exact same symptoms if the ignition switch burns out... so first test the battery cables themselves.. if they are fine .. then plan on replacing the ignition switch.

don't know if this is needed now, but try the crank sensor. I had the same problem years ago, and the crank sensor was the problem. this is common in many 3.8 engines. i'm currently looking at another ninety-eight, and guess what...the crank sensor was replaced for the same reasons.

Sounds like carbon build up on the contacts inside the electrical ignition switch which is not the key cylinder. Its located on the lower steering coluum if coluum shift or if you have a floor shift it will be inside the console
