Dexcool vs Green coolant

Is it okay to use Dexcool in a car that is designed for dexcool? What was the reason for Dexcool??

Dexcool is an extended life coolant-you cannot mix the 2 or you you will have serious issues. If you are going to switch over the the dexcool from the green you need to flush the entire cooling system.

Yes, if your car currently has Dexcool in it, you must use the Dexcool to refill it.  However, there currently is lots and lots of trouble with Dexcool. In fact there was a lawsuit over the problems with it.  In fact GM dealers, I hear, are doing complete radiator flushes and replacing all the Dexcool with the old fashion green stuff.  If you would like to change your vehicle over, please ask a certified mechanic for more details specific to your car.  I work for an auto parts store and we constantly are advising people of this Dexcool issue.

Stick with using Dex Cool. Your engine is made up of different metals and the Dex Cool has the proper protection package for your engine. The old green coolant does not have the same protection package for these modern engines. You cannot flush all of the old coolant out of an engine as there are traces that remain. Traces that can mix with and cause future issues. Best thing to do is to properly maintain your coolant level, keep air out of the cooling system, and change it out every 3 yrs/ 40 to 50,000 miles, and youshould be fine.

No matter what anyone says, Do NOT use conventional coolant. This system was designed for DexCool. As long as you don't run the engine while low on coolant, DexCool is still the best option. To do a complete flush you'll have to tap into the heater hoses...not that easy.

Are you using Dexcool, or have you replaced the coolant with standard Green antifreeze? If you replaced the Dexcool with standard green antifreeze, the low coolant indicator may give false readings. An extremely dirty reservoir bottle can cause the same problem.

What type of coolant to use for a 2002 Mercury Sable.
It should say on the overflow bottle to use Dexcool only if it is Dexcool and if it does not say anywhere then it should be just the plain old green antifreeze. If it is Dexcool use only Dexcool do not mix any oyher type with it and remember to never open the radiator cap on a hot engine let it cool down first.

i would stay with what you always use if it's not creating any problems!I have never heard anything good about dexcool! If it ain't broke don't fix it! I've been running green in my 99 jimmy and i'm at 250k.

Do you see the coolant leaking on the motor? From the drivers side, you can inspect the intake manifold...unfortunately as good as this motor usually is...it is known for leaking at the intake manifold...and requires a new intake gasket...DO NOT USE dexcool after the replacement...many teams believe the dexcool is part of the problem...use the coolant that "For All Coolant Systems" is still the green anti-freeze...Hope this helps.

Keep in mind that there are some things you wouldn't want to substitute on your car when it comes to fluids and maintenance but you should be safe to use an aftermarket anti-freeze. Most anti-freeze is a form of alcohol since the boiling and freezing points of alcohol is much higher and lower than plain tap water.

Yes, These engines are a combination of aluminum castings and cast iron castings. The orange dexcool is designed to control the acidity of the coolant. If you put in green it is going to eat away at the aluminum. It could cause leaks in your head gaskets, intake gaskets, water pumps and promote clogging of important coolant areas in the block.

Hello! Your van most likely still has the coolant that was in it from the factory - which would be DexCool. If you can see it in the coolant overflow, and it is orange-ish in color - it's DexCool (or possibly a DexCool-friendly brand). I would suggest a full, and thorough coolant system flush - and then refill with the green stuff. If your van does have DexCool - you CAN NOT mix it with anything that does not implicitly state that is compatible. If you do - it will harden and congeal and ruin your coolant system - and perhaps even your engine.
