Oil condition could be a problem
I am inclined to think that you took the car to an auto spares shop that does free fault codes reading, you will find that it is servos/ solenoids or problem TCM that is causing the problems
may even be problem wiring connectors or harness problems around the transmission
I am sure that it is not a transmission problem , just what controls the ration changes
Assuming this is an automatic transmission, odds are you have lost a band in your transmission, this will require a rebuild, you may also notice it will fail to shift into high gear as well?

You have a bad Parking brake, Brake, or Neutral safety switch. Not the end of the world on this one.
SOURCE: car won't go over 45 mph
does it have a cadalitic converter on the exhaust? if it does could be pluged up and restricting exhaust flow. dosent sound like anything is wrong with transmission. if its got a fuel filter chg. that could be pluged. also chk. vacume advance on distributor might have seazed up and will not advance spark. timming chain maybe? the car is almost 30 years old could be any one of thies i mentoned or all of them.
SOURCE: Shifter won't move
there is a selenoid that unlocks the shifter it may be broke. you can also check your brake switch.

Try disconnecting the electrical connector at the transmission and see if it stall when you put it in gear. You will get a service engine light, but not to worry, it will go back out once you reconnect.
By disconnecting the wire connector we can tell if it is transmission related.
Good luck, let me know.

Does it shift ok in all other gears( forward gears) after you go thru what you describe? No slipping between shifts? Any jurking when it shifts? Any winning or weird noise comming from transmission? When was the last time transmission was serviced? New oil and filter. Need this info before i can help with your problem.
did you check the tranny fluid while the car was running?
