Every time the engine light goes on my transmission gets very jumpy, i shift from drive to park and i hear this shifting loud noise and jumpy. also when i am driving; the trany does not want to shift internally is automatic and does not want to shift internally it takes a while to shift and needs a high rpm to do so.
Input shaft speed sensor or out put speed sensor . Have the vehicle checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . This would probably point you in a diagnostic direction .

my 99 Malibu is doing the same thing... it turned out to be a transmission pressure regulator. $400 it was fixed.

i fixed mine by pulling each and every fuse in all the fuse boxes and replacing them with new ones. the hhr fuses have a tendency to work loose and cause all kinds of little problems. i searched the forums for the answer to the traction control light problem and never found an answer that worked until i talked to a "shade tree" mechanic in my area and he told me to do the fuse thing. been a month now and no more problems.
