Sounds like the water pump is cavitating . Replace water pump. Check coolant level also. Open the bleeder valve usually located on thermostat housing to remove air from system. close valve when coolant is present while filling. close radiator cap and top off recovery bottle to correct level. These engines are prone to overheating, do not let temp gauge get in the red.

as long as the engine temperature is normal, i would suspect a clogged heater core, the dex-cool antifreeze is notorious for building up deposits in cooling system. have heater core flushed first to see if it makes any difference

Probably. Is the coolant level ok? If yes, then change the t'stat, sounds like it's opening and closing randomly, may be defective.

Some here is some additional information, this weekend I flushed the cooling system and here are the results. driving the car it reaches temp(gauge a little below center) drove the car to work this morning and the heater worked great. came home at lunch and the heater was working good. then it turned cold and the temp gauge started to rise. as soon as it got right above center the heater got hot and the gauge went helow the center line. did it twice more and the same thing each time. here is a recap of what has been done. 3 weeks ago replace thermastat and clean fluid (same results but it took about 2 weeks to resurface), this weekend flused the system and put in fresh coolant with correct level. seems as though it is the same issue but different. thoughts adn thank you
