You don't have to remove that cover. The simplest way to remove your key is while in park move the shifter and turn the key at the same time. Not park out of park, but the little play that it has in park.

I just had this happen tonight!!! I have a 2011 Equinox and when I got home tonight the key would not come out, even though it did turn the motor off. My brother told me it happened to him with a ford. There is a "band" at the base of the gear shift, he said to pull it up, so I took my phone with him on it, and tried it. I pulled really hard and did not feel it move, but he told me to try to turn it on, and off again,, and guess what, the key came out!!! He said if this band slipped just a fraction down it will stop the computer from sending the msg. to the ignition that it is locked in park. I already had a tow scheduled, and was reading on the internet that it was a shifting problem and the dealership had to take it apart, all I was seeing was dollar signs. Hope this works for you!!

SOURCE: 2006 Chevy Cobalt - key

Went thru this with the neighbor. At the 6:00 position under the column is a plastic panel. Remove it with small screwdriver. Using index finger , press on white plastic button. This releases switch and allows you to remove key. Replace plastic panel.

SOURCE: key is stuck shiftr doesnt lock in to release it

Does your key turn all the way to where it should be when you usually take it out of the ignition? If not, then you have a bad nuetral saftey switch. If so try turn the wheel in either direction while attempting to pull out the key. I hope tis helped you out. It would be greatly appreciated if you could rate my answer, Thanks. MIKE-

SOURCE: MY CAR IS ON AND WON'T TURN OFF KEY STUCK IN 2009 COBALT

try playing with shifter. move from park to low rapidly and push to park with some force. try this a few times. the shifter sends a signal to a lock actuator to allow your ignition to release key. if that doesnt work remove your steering wheel lower cover. usually acces 2-3 screws from underneath cover. u will see what looks like a gold pushbutton located near lock cylinder u may be able to get key released by manually actuating that solenoid

2006 Chevy Cobalt SS. How to get past the antitheft system on it please.

A nice simple answer, you can't. Think of it this way, the car doesn't know you are the owner, and it is there to stop exactly what you are trying to do. You have two computer ECM and BCM, plus the antitheft module and a number of sensors all trying to stop you. All you have to do is the re-learn procedure. Plan B is an auto electrician or alarm / radio installer or auto locksmith.

30 Minute Re-Learn Procedure
  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
  3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .
