The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

That has nothing to do with the neutral safety switch (totally separate problem). You either have a broken adjuster or the cable adjuster is simply out of adjustment for your gearshift indicator. This cable and adjuster for this is located on the steering column just below the shifter. If the adjuster is broken (pretty common) the gearshift indicator asembly must be replaced to get it to work correctly.

to make sure which one disconnect the cable and with your hand click all the way to the front, start the engine have someone in the vehicle with the parking brake on and their foot on the brake the manually put it in reverse, if still no reverse its the transmission.

Your shift indicator is simply stuck. Until you have the time to fix it, your best solution is to start from park then slowly shift to the next setting which is reverse, then neutral then park. All automatic transmissions shift pretty much the same which means you only have to move 3 notches the opposite way from park to be in drive. You don't need a shift indicator for that. Later you can replace the indicator with a dealer factory replacement.

DIsconnext and reconnect the linkage at the transmission. You may want top replace the linkage cable all together. Make sure you set the parking break and block the tires

It is possible that the shift linkage is out of adjustment and is going into neutral and not making it to Reverse, try moving the gear selector slowly from park, through reverse to Neutral, and see if it will go into reverse somwhere in between. If this does not work ,you may have Reverse gear failure, a common problem with explorer/ranger transmissions. unfortunatly it requires rebuilding the transmission

Shift cable might have melted and have hard spot. Block wheels and put vehicle into neutral. Have someone else operate shifter to see if cable is the problem.

There is a switch between the brake and the transmission. I forget what its called but unless you have your brake pedal pressed your car will not shift out of park. If you do have your brake pedal pressed there may be something wrong with the sensor.
