SOURCE: 88 Bronco ii Coolant not circulating

Good Day,

Sounds like the thermostat is working properly, the only other cause for the valve/lifter noise could be the oil pump is not pumping enough oil up to the top of the motor. I suggest doing an oil change(if you haven'y aleready), be sure to flush several quarts through, after sitting for 5 years I'm sure the old oil is pretty sludgy, this well help rule out this possibilty. As far as the water pump goes, It either works or doesn't typically when they are on there way out the will leak from the gaskets. A bad head gasket would cause white smoke form the exhaust as coolant get's into the oil and is burned off, so I don;t hink this is the problem.

Here's a start for you, hope this helps and good luck

I have the same vehicle...check to see that the heater control valve is opening...usually mounted on the fire wall and has about a 5/8" inch hose that come from the T-stat....it esentially bypasses the heater core when the heat is not selected. The hoses going through the fire wall on the left (passenger) side of the vehicle are strictly for the heater - it "heat" is selected and those hoses are cold - based on what you've already done, the next conclusion would be the heater control valve...could be something as simple as a disconnected vacuum line.

Good Luck,

Mike...

Remove both raidiator hoses and try flushing the the radiator matrix out with fresh water refit them and run the car topping up the coolant about half a litre every minute, do this with the small pipe at the resovoir disconnected to allow it to bleed up properly, once your sure all the air is out the system put the cap and the pipe on and let it heat up, you now want to find the feed pipe to your heater matrix and disconnect it to make sure the matrix is recieving a warm and free flowing supply of water if so its your heater matrix thats blocked replace it if not then switch the engine off and locate the feed to your water pump and the pipe leaving the water pump.squeeze the pipe leaving the water pump together as hard as possible and get someone to start the engine. The flow from the water pump should push your hand apart or at least move it with some force, if not then strip and inspect the pump replace as req.Failing this then its check the thermostats time( if fitted ) Remove them submerse them in an open kettle with a thermostat and check which temp that they open at (usually around 85 deg centigrade)replace as req.If all of this is working and i doubt that you will get this far without finding something then its rip all the pipes off and check for blockages time, great fun i think not but i hope this was helpful and wish you the best of luck! b sure to give me a vote if this is helpful, thanks

How do I check to see if the water pump is working on a 1991 Ford Bronco?

  1. Open the car hood and locate the thermostat on the top of the radiator lid. Pull the thermostat and start the car. Watch the temperature gauge carefully. If the water pump is working properly, the engine should take a long time to warm up (if it ever does). With the thermostat removed, the coolant should circulate continuously, making it harder for the engine to warm up. If you cannot tell if the car is heating up slow or not, move to Step 2.
  2. Turn the car off and locate the water pump and the water pump drive belt in the engine compartment. Use the wrench set to loosen the belt retaining bolt and pull the belt off of the pump. Spin the belt drive with your hands to see if it rolls smoothly and to determine if there is any movement or "play" in the driveshaft. If the pump seems in good working order, replace the belt, tighten the retaining screw back up, and move on to Step
  3. Locate the coolant drain plug on the bottom of the radiator and use the wrench set to remove it. Allow all of the coolant to drain out into a container and dispose of it. Replace the drain plug in the bottom of the radiator and then pour coolant into the radiator. Start the car up and watch the level of coolant carefully. If the water pump is working properly, the coolant level should drop quickly as the pump circulates coolant to other areas of the engine. Fill the radiator back up with coolant and watch it to drop again. If the coolant drops then your water pump is fine, however if the coolant drops very slowly or not at all it may be time for a new pump.

How much should it cost to replace water pump hoses?

2 hoses-about 15-20 bucks, 4 new clamps-about 5-6 bucks. If your old clamps are still good, just buy the hoses.

I have a 91 ford Bronco and want to do my own radiator flush but I the radiator does not have an outlet underneath to drain out the old coolant. Is there another outlet somewhere else?

the thing is 20, you can afford new hoses and at this time that would be a good idea anyway. get a big bowl or pan and put it under the bottom radiator hose connection and loosen it. the coolant will come out in a hurry. and the engine and radiator will drain out. put new hoses on and refill.

88 bronco II, heater hose going to water is cold, and my heater blows cold air, is my water pump going bad? the return heater hose is warm, it was heating once in awhile now it don't heat at all just cold...

I would try flushing heater core to see if it's plugged. I don't think it's waterpump, your rig would be overheating if it was. Leaking is most common waterpump failure.

My bronco leaks water under the ungine badly

There are a few things that could cause a major leak in your cooling system Check all of your hoses to be sure they are tight check your radiator for holes and leaks.Check the overfill tank for cracks if it is equipped.Check the hoses that go to the heater for breaks in the hoses or for leaks.Next would be to check your water pump for leaks in the gasket and the thermostat housing for leaks Also check the hoses that are connected to the radiator for leaks..If its that major of a leak I would look more at the radiator or water pump.I hope this provides a little information to help find a solution.

RUNNING HOT

The only item left that controls the flow of the coolant is the thermostat. It is and usually replaced with the water pump or radiator because it is an inexpensive part. The thermostat blocks the flow of coolant until the vehicle warms up to the thermostats specified temperate recommended by the vehicle manufacture then opens to allow flow of coolant.

Installing a water pump in a 1991 ford bronco?

You may have to remove the radiator depending on the amount of room you have to work in, drain coolant, remove hose or hoses from pump, remove fan blade if it has one attached to the front of the pump, remove all the bolts holding the pump to the block and lightly pry the pump from the block as the sealant will be holding it on.
Clean the surface of the block where the waterpump seals and also the pump gasket surface if you are going to re use it, use sealant cement on both surfaces and fit the gasket onto the pump, put a couple of bolts through the bolt holes to hold the gasket in place while you fit the pump to the block, tighten all bolts and refit hoses etc.
fill the radiator with new coolant, start the car and check for leaks
hope this helps

I have a 1975 Ford Early Bronco that has been sitting for 20 yrs

Change plugs & wires, New battery , Install radiator. Crank it over if it starts and is smoking needs new vale guide seals and maybe new rings. But try to get it started first then go from there. If it wont turn over try to turn over by hand from front crank pully with socket and breaker bar to free up motor.
