X-type jaguar automatic (gear box fault)

Hi, I have a 2002 x-type jaguar (3 litre), and the dash is showing gearbox fault, the car does not start. HELP!!! I have a 2003 Jaguar X type and the Gear Box Fault message comes up on dash. What is going on with this car?

    the dash shows gearbox fault.

when i start the car the next day it is fine.

this has happened to me twice in the rain on the highway when i'm around 65-70 mph.

the rpm's are usually at 2.5-3000 at that speed. when the "gearbox fault" appears it is at about 4000 rpm.

Hi you need to get a code read, but check the connector on the front of the g/box and the passenger side footwell for dampness

I have a 2002 X type (2 litre. done 44000 miles), dash showed gear box problem, (red circle light up). I pulled out and turned the engine off. 5 minutes later turned the engine on. The engine running but the car would not drive either in drive or reverse. Turned the engine off again and on the car driving but not much power. The care is taken to the Jag. dealer and told is misfiring + some gear box faults. Suggesting to change some coils and see (cost about £200+). also possible need to change the gear box costing about £2500+. Please advice. Shall I go ahead with the repair? Should I part exchange.

Thank you for that but no codes are showing up, the indicator is not working, or the fuel needle moving. Mechanic used his tool to clear the security and my car would not allow it

In reference to the X-type "GearBox Fault”
Thanks John,
That was the only solution to the problem after been tow however.

Going forward, What could be a solution once I replace the battery and continue to receive the "GearBox Fault” message?
I hope it isn’t a control Module or even possibly a transmission, ought…

You are getting water in the Engine Control Module (passenger side under the dash on US models. The culprit is usually the windshield wiper cowl (plastic panel the wiper arms poke through) isn't sealed to the bottom of the windshield. You probably see a big gap on the passenger side between it and the windshield. Water intrudes, runs down wetting the cabin pollen filter and eventually runs down the wires and into the ECM. When it is sufficiently dry it will start and act normal again. I took the additional step of installing a flexible piece of plastic 2 feet long that is "domed" over the filter underneath the cowl to deflect water away from the filter. If that doesn't keep water out I will come up with and try yet another mod, perhaps attaching another plastic section above the ECM wiring like a lean-to roof that lets water shirt off and harmlessly fall away without getting the wiring wet.

I have a 2009 X type 2.2 diesel. With a gearbox fault light and limp home mode problem. If I stop and turn the engine off and then start it agagain it's fine until the next time. Jaguar deny it's their problem but many people seem to have it happen to them. It's potentialy very dangerous and is clearly (I believe) a softwear problem. But why do they deny it happens.

Jaguar X SE 2.5 gearbox problem

hey johnhoile,

Sorry to break the bad new to you, put you most likely need a transmission depending on what codes are stored in the system. I have dont numerous automatic transmission on x-types all they all started with a gear box fault light on.

If the codes have something to do with a incorrect gear ration that is a guarantee red flag for a new transmission

Gearbox sometimes take a while to go into drive

if it is hard to shift when the vehicle is cold chances are that the oil in the gear box is too thick take it to a shop and try using a thinner oil than what is in the gear box and this will eradicae your problem
