Oil pressure wiring fault

Oil pressure checked - good, oil pressure sensor replaced, engine regularly serviced. Even with the oil pressure switch disconnected, the warning light flickers intermittently. What next?

It can be in te instrument cluster. Or the wire that goes to the oil pressure sending unit is shorted

Thanks Manny, I'll try finding the other end of the wire that connects to the end of the sender and replace it.

SOURCE: oil pressure light on at idle for Volvo S40 MY2005 B5244S4 Engine

Since you are going to check the one way valve and cleaning the filter too, I would recommend to check the intake air filter and clean it throughly. After that use carb cleaner to free up the nozzles of the injector valve . If the engine sound better after using carb cleaner, add some into the fuel from the fuel filter or pump, whichever one has easy access, and gun your engine in short bursts, after which it should run better.........sodeep

SOURCE: vilvo s40 serviced in june; engine oil warning

most definitely the cylinder head gasket is gone.the oil does not just disappear,it finds its way to the radiator,i.e. mixes with the water.unplug the rediator cap with care(when the engine is cold)and u will see some kind of sludge, creamy colour, which confirms that the cylinder head gasket is burnt.u need an engineer to do the job for u.

Testimonial: "thanks for that - I suspected as much but confirmation is very helpful"

SOURCE: oil pressure warning on 2001 Volvo v70 with 220Km

The best way to attack this is to have your oil pressure checked. That would rule out a pump problem or the sender issue. If you want the least expensive fix is to just replace the oil pressure sender yourself and then see if the problem goes away. You can also add a thicker oil when you change the oil to see if that solves the problem. A 10W30 oil is thinner than a 10W50. If this helps then the engine or pump may be worn or failing. I hope the cheap fix helps!!

How can i fix a p0522 code that is read by my engine light? Can i reset it and forget it? Or is it dangerous?

code p 0522 refers to engine oil pressure sensor/switch---low voltage === causes --wiring short to ground ---engine oil pressure sensor/switch---ECM
any reference to oil pressure warnings should be taken seriously as a destroyed engine is a result of inaction
first get it to an accredited service shop that handles your make of vehicle and have the oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge
if it not a pump/ oil level problem , replace the sensor

The oil light comes on, but there is plenty of oil

well you have two things to check first to replace the oil presure switch and the check for the wire sometime the switch start leaking on the wire. if this didnot fix the problem then you need to check the oil pressure if this is didnot pass then you have an internal eng problem

I had the error code for the cam shaft sensor, I changed it , started ok for a few times. Now truck won't start and I get the code P0522

The oil pressure sensor or sender may be at fault.

The vehicle computer is called a PCM - Power Control Module. The oil pressure sensor/sender sends a signal to to it. If the PCM detects an out of range signal (i.e incorrect) it can shut off the engine to prevent damage.

Your fault is more likely to be electrical than mechanical (i.e you don't have a faulty or broken oil pump).

Your first course of action should be to check the oil level and condition of the oil, then check the wiring around the oil pressure sensor.

An oil pressure sensor is easily replaced. You can do that job yourself, if needed

3.5L V6. Why does oil pressure light turn on intermittently?

1. As a basic measure I would make sure the correct grade and spec oil is going in the engine. You can no longer trust that a local mechanic or even a dealer service center will necessarily use the required product as stipulated by the manufacturer. It is always better to buy and supply your own so you know the correct product is being used.

2. I would not assume there is a problem with the oil pressure warning light even though there could be.
The first thing the mechanic should have done when you reported the oil pressure issue is to hook up an independent mechanical oil pressure gauge and check oil pressure when the engine is hot at different RPMs. Any oil pressure issue will usually show up at idle when the engine has been warmed up properly and the engine oil is hot (unless you have some kind of intermittent oil pressure relief valve that is sticking). Just replacing parts without actually knowing what the oil pressures are at different RPMs is being sloppy and negligent.
This is what you need to do now. Contact a business that can hook up their own pressure gauge to your engine and have them check the oil pressure readings at various RPMs when the engine is fully warm. If there is a low oil pressure issue it will show up on the oil pressure gauge. As you have a new oil pump there should be no issue now with oil volume or a sticking oil pressure relief valve which on your engine should be part of the oil pump assembly.

3. Worn engines will not be able to sustain required oil pressures. Oil pressure is not produced by the oil pump. The oil pump produces oil flow but the resistance to flow is what produces the oil pressure and that resistance is created by fine clearances between operating engine parts especially on the crankshaft and components connected to it. Once the engine wears the clearances increase and the oil flows past the parts much more easily and produces/builds much less pressure.
How well your engine with over 90000 miles has been maintained depends on how often all the owners changed the engine oil and filter , whether they kept the engine oil level up to full (most owners rarely ever check oil levels between services) and whether they always used the correct product. Manufacturer oil change intervals shown in service schedules can be 10000, 12000 miles or more which is much too infrequent for the type of use 95% of private vehicles experience which typically are on the severe to very severe use end of the spectrum. Engine oil typically needs to be changed at least at half the mileage shown in service books (at least twice as frequently) and thus at least every 5000 miles if you want your engine to last.

Why does the oil warning light comes on after the oil was replaced?

Loss of oil pressure or faulty pressure switch knackered oil pump
Main thing don't run engine till you find out what caused the problem as the engine can tear its self apart if its a pump or flow problem

GM said the sensor by the oil filter on a 1997 achevia is a crank sensor you its a oil presser sw. and it is linked to Ign sw. how , will the eng die in a second if the wires are broken or the sensor

the oil pressure sensor tells the ECM when there is insufficient oil pressure to safely run the engine
when you start an engine there is oil covering the pump inlet and the pressure buils up
if there is insufficient oil to maintain pressure ,or the pump cannot maintain a low preset pressure , the ecm will shut the engine down to protect it
like wise if the wiring is loose /faulty the signal from the sensor is interrupted and that tells the ecm to shut the engine down
again if the sensor is faulty , the ecm will shut the engine down
how to fix :-
install a mechanical oil gauge in the system and check for oil pressure achieved
replace the sensor switch with a known good one
run the fault codes

Replaced oil sensor light still comes on

MAY---May-be you really have low oil pressure.. The way this sensor works is when you turn off the engine it closes to ground.. and when you start the engine.. the oil pressure opens it and the light goes out.. SO.. if the wire going to it is grounded out somewhere between the sensor and the dash board the light will stay on.. 3 choices.. 1. bad sensor (even though you replaced it) 2. wire is shorted to ground.. remove wire from sensor while engine is running.. light should go out. 3. you actually have really low oil presure. next.. after you have exuasted #1-2. you can remove sensor and install a real oil pressure guage and see what the pressure really is.. If you have very low or no oil pressure..1. Check oil level.(probably should have done this first) 2.pull oil pan and replace oil pump.. while you are there check a main bearing and a rod bearing for wear.. worn out bearings will cause low oil pressure. If you have good oil pressure install the pressure guage permanetly and forget about light.

Oil pressure indicator lamp illuminates intermittently

1. check oil level now! If low, add as needed, and keep checking regularly.
2. If level is OK, check oil pressure switch (or sending unit), and the connections at the switch.
3. Have the oil pressure measured by a good mechanic. If the pressure is good, it means that the problem lies somewhere in the pressure sensor or indicator circuit. If the pressure is low, there is a problem in the engine - either a clogged oil filter, bad oil pump, or blockage within the engine.

Fuel pressure should be 55-62 PSI. I encounter many of these with low fuel pressure and giving that rough idle and extended cranking time. Due to the type of fuel pum p you may have to cycle the switch to obtain normal fuel prssure. Some vehicle needs to be cranking before fuel pressure is obtained.
