Hyundai Sonata 2000, sluggish to start only after fueling
Battery is strong, starts immediately except when I refuel. In that case, the car is sluggish in starting, strange to me, maybe someone has a clue. Thanks.
1999 Sonata is hard to start only after refueling. Actually starts to sputter and will die once gas cap is removed. Requires about 10-15 seconds of cranking to start. Problem goes away after about 5 minutes of driving and starts fine even when cold until next refuel. Have checked many forums and techs all basically say I'm nuts and start guessing things like water in the distributor or starter problems. It IS weird, I'll admit, but the problem happens just as I've described and it appears that numerous owners report the same problem. SOMEBODY has to have figured it out by now.

Re: Hyundai Sonata 2000, sluggish to start only after...
Purge control solenoid valve is suspect. After refueling, the charcoal canister can become 'saturated' and this valve (if stuck OPEN) sucks air through it and can draw raw fuel into the intake manifold creating a 'flood' condition.

CarGurusMar 5, 2013 - My Hyundai Sonata won't start, everything comes on when the key is turned but no ... it is in park and until I jiggle the shift until the light does come on it will not start. Was in ... My 2009 Sonata has been "perfect" with no issues.
There are some possibilities which you
will have to check in this case:-- 1) First of all check the power and
voltage to the battery.with meter it will show exact 12 volt if the
battery is charged.if the voltage is less get the battery charged at local auto
repair shop.if the battery is internally drained and not getting charged then
its time to replace the battery. 2) When you crank the car do you see
spark coming at the spark plug? if no then its time to check the spark plugs
and coil pack.if the spark plugs are not worn out and looks new then its time
to check coil pack.the spark plugs gets power to spark from coil pack. 3) The other thing to check in this case
is the starter solenoid of the car.if the battery is charged and you start the
car then it gives power to the starter to start the car.but if starter is
faulty or not connected properly then car will not start. 4) The other thing to check in this case
is fuel in the car.if there is fuel in the car then check the blockages
in the fuel pump if the fuel pump looks proper then check the fuel filter above
the fuel pump. 5) If all the above possibilities
mentioned above checked out OK/perfect then its a electrical issue and
the wiring's in the car needs to be checked.the car gets
power from the battery to get started.so the wires from battery needs to be
checked one by one. Thanks. keep updated for any more

I have a 2001 Sonata. Mine did the same thing but a little different. I bet you anything its a senser. Get it read at an autoparts store. I had two sensors go out and throw the car off whack with the "check engine" light on.
