My temp guage never goes above the 1/2 way mark, yet my cooloing fans come on all the time even after driving it only 15 minutes. Yesterday( after a year at least with no problems) my guage pegged out and the overheat light came on. My heater also does not blow hot air, and its been like that for about a year.are these related? and can it be a bad thermostat? I find it odd that after my car says its overheated, the needle shows an ok temp in as little as 5 minutes after I turn off the engine. If it were really thaT HOT IT WOULDNT COOL DOWN THAT QUICK WOULD IT? could my thermostat be intermitantly stuck? would that cause both problems?
can some one tell me how to change my thermostat, if this could be the problem?

i had tha same problem..n i took it upon myself to figure it out...i had a small leak in tha lil short fat hose that sits under tha manifold n just above tha belt...couldnt see it leaking fron there but when placed my hand up n under hose ther was a hole that i could put my fingertip in...after changing this...heater improved...alot of otha problems still comin up but solved that one

Had the exact problem. Turned out that it was the thermostat that needed replacing, relatively cheap and quick by mobile mechanic. Things were fine for a year and the second time it happened I assumed it was the same problem. However, this time the thermostat was fine, wasn't sticking, and I had a slow leak in radiator, losing colant and causing engine to overheat, which paradoxically had stopped the heater working as well. Had to get new hose also by local mobile mechanic and everything seems okay again except for the intermittent "stuck in park" problem that a lot of people are also experiencing.
Hey dear i have face same problem last time .. i have jaguar 2001 S-type . i have try alot time to find out where is problem but when i tried .. then i contact to jaguar repair center they just change same rabied warshall for cooling water area .. they charge me 500$
but u have first check ur engine or cooling water if its going very hot if just ur thermostat bad showing error me be its sensor

Hello ,yes the thermastat can be bad and only sticking every now and then , next you have a coolant temperature sesor /switch and a engine temp sensor and a radiator cooling fan temp sensor / switch hope this helped god bless
I have a 2002 jaguar X type. For some reason, the temperature gauge in the dash now periodically shows hot to the max.. all the way over. But the car is not overheated. What can that be? It's really scary. I work at night. Get off at 3am. DO NOT want to be stuck by the side of the road. Anyone familiar with this? Had a new radiator put in back in April. Don't know if that's related. This problem started about 3 days ago. But last night, on my way from work, it kept showing completely overheated, but it wasn't. Sure would like to fix this... myself if possible. Appreciate any help. Thanks

First question is what constitutes "overheating". Since the car has been parked for years, the thermostat could be sticking closed. The cooling system could have air pockets and need to be bled. The water pump may be corroded inside and not pumping enough volume. If the gauge goes above half way, the fans should start up. But half way should be more or less normal, not hot yet. I would look at flow problems first, beginning with removing the thermostat and driving it without one for a few days. Also check and see if there is a process to bleed the cooling system of air.
First question is: does the fan come on at all, even as the temp begins to rise on the guage?
If not, check the relay or the sender for the temp (that may be what you replaced) Then look at the connections for the fan--- and, have you checked the fan for operation with known 12v source?
u need a vehicle speed sensor(vss) it is located on top of the trans about 60-70 dollars for the part and 10 minutes to install go online and find the vehicle speed sensor location for ur car there is only 1 bolt to remove it u will need a 10 mm wrench and there is one connector but always check the basics first check all of ur fuses with test light or with car off pull each fuse and check to see if there blown if u see a burn or break inside the fuse it is bad replace it. but i'm sure it's the vss. as for overheating check coolant level start car let it get warm/operating temp with the hood up watch to see if the cooloing fan comes on (make sure ac is off because when the ac is turned on there is a seperate fan that will run constently untill ac is turned off.) the cooling fan will come on for 15-30 secs and go off if operating normally if the fan does not come on which happens to all cars like i said check fuses and switch cooloing fan relays to see if it comes on try spining the fan by hand with car off and no key in the ignition u may feel the fan is locked up or damaged
Have you tried running car from cold, with rad cap off, & heater turned on, coolant topped up, an inch or 2 from top of rad? Let it run up to operating temperature, cooling fans kick in & out 2 or 3 times, and top up coolant as needed, then put rad cap back on, & fill return bottle up to mark. There may be a worse problem, but bleeding system as I have described, ensures all air out of heater core & cooling system, which has been cause many times before on all makes & models of vehicles. Especially when no heat situation. Let me know if it helps.
When you mention the radiator having a hot upper in pipe and a cool bottom out pipe tells me that the coolant is not moving around the engine. This could be down to a water pump not working, blocked radiator, thermostat not opening. The bottom hose should be cooler than the top hose but once the engine is up to working temp which is around 85/90 degrees c for an audi the bottom still should be farly hot to touch. Hope this helps
The Temp gauge should read in the middle of the gauge at operating temperature. This is normal. The radiator fan should come on after idling (not driving) for 20 minutes. The fan should also come on when you turn on the AC. Are you experiencing overheat problems?
