There is probably a problem with the transmission. It might be in protected mode, meaning there is damage and won't let you go in reverse.

Check the fluid level and top off if necessary. If it persists it may need to be diagnosed at a dealer.

1986 Chevy van. How do you ajust transmission shift linkage? When you put it in reverse you got to hold it just right for it to shift and engage.

Probably just need to replace the plastic grommets that disintegrated. Two of them gone will cause your problem. Adjusting it will only cause hard shifting in forward gears.

My 2002 Chevy venture van will not shift from second gear. It goes in first second and reverse fine. What could it be???

Time to rebuild the transmission, for any number of reasons

Usually people never change trans fluid at all or every 3 years
as required
Then you have a tran that is 12 years or older,so it's worn out

97 venture 4 speed electronic transmission not shifting into 4th

4th clutch hub splines are stripped off. GM didn't harden the splines until 2004 or so so the early model gradually wear to the point where they are so thin they strip off - and then, no 4th gear
