I replaced the water pump on the 2.5L outback wagon, and had to remove the timing belt in the process. i marked the timing belt & pinions prior to removal. When i scribed the original marks to the new belt, I reinstalled it, removed the pin from the tensioner, buttoned it up, and it won't start. I dismantled it again, checked the marks, reassembled it - still won't crank. HELP!
How do I determine where the valves are (on each side) and where the pistons are? How do I verify the position of the camshaft pinions with the timing belt off?
Thankyou!

It will crank, but it sounds like the timing is off.
It's not cranking at all? Possibly the starter was disconnected in the disassembly process. I had a similar problem on a 94 cherokee. I would also check the battery too.
