1 make shore you have the correct grade AUTO transmission oil.2 fit an external oil cooler. This can be done two ways. no1 add it into the system by cutting the oil return hose from radiator to the gear box and install the cooler or. no2 completely disconnect the radiator and install the external cooler independently.either way you will need oil cooler 2 lengths of transmission hose & 4 hose clamps. In Australia it comes as a kit with all clamps & hoses cost depends on size small medium or large cooler. when fitting I found it best to cut the pipes in the space between the radiator & the motor gives you more room to work just have to use longer bits of hose. Hope this helps. sick51

SOURCE: timing belt diagram 1997 kia sportage 4x4

My scanner isnt working, so i hope this can help you out some...On the left Camshaft..you will a stamp I and E...iI is for intake and E is for exhaust..The I should be up at 12 o'clock and the E should be at 4..you will also have marks on the timing plate behind the camshafts to help you line it up right...Now on the Right Camshaft you will have the same marks, but this time you want the E at 12 and the I at 7 o'clock..And the crankshaft should have a little notch on it, where you can line that up at 12 o'clock with the notch imprint that is on the plate for you..You may have to clean those areas, and use a light, so you can see them..I hope this helps you out..Goodluck...

Show me where is the knock sensor located on the motor of a 1999 kia sportage

the knock sensor should be on the passenger side of the motor a short distance from the oil filter on a stand off on the block. can be tricky to get to but you loose no coolant changing it

I have a 1997 Kia Sportage (#KNAJA5278VA787759). The automatic transmission used to not shift into overdrive at 60 km/hr, but only after the engine was warm--after about 5 km of driving. The problem...

I had a simular problem.
Ended up changing the themastat and the gears changed into overdrive when the temp. got to normal running.
Be carefull that you get right thermastat though. You want one that reaches the normal working Temp as soon as possable.
Hope this helps.

2001 kia sportage . transmission does not change

Popular Problems Checks
1. Car will not go into gear:
  • Gear selector cable has failed
  • Brake lock solenoid/brake light swtich has failed not allowing the gear selector to move out of "Park"
  • Excessively low transmission fluid (note: if car is operated for an extended amount of time with low fluid level the transmission will fail prematurely)
  • Shorted electrical component not allowing the PCM to control the transmission. Example: shorted fuse
  • Flex plate (flywheel) is broken completely not transferring engine power to the transmission.
2. Car goes into gear but then fades out of gear or is slipping while driving:
  • Transmission fluid is low
  • Transmission clutch discs or bands are worn out or burned
  • Faulty transmission shift solenoid.
3. Car goes into gear but does not shift out of first:
  • Blown fuse to the PCM controller
  • Faulty vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
  • Shorted second gear control solenoid
  • Faulty transmission controller (PCM)

It could be a problem with the fuel pump or igntion module/ coil pack. The next time it stops, fuel pressure needs to be checked and have the ignition coil pack and module tested at a local parts store.

Transmission going bad?

popping out of gear means your shifting forks need adjustment, same as the grinding. the tranny is probably good, just the top part, the shifting mechanism needs to be repaired, so it would be cheaper to repair than rebuilding the whole transmision.still, im guessing about 300-500$ depending where you live.
