99 kia sportage starter

I have a 99 kia sportage 2wd automatic. Every now and then it wont start or crank. thought it was the starter since knocking on the starter while some body turned the key would start it. So i replaced the starter, but it still does it every now and then, so i had some one knock the starter again while i turned the key and it worked. Dont know what to do to fix it, not sure what the problem could be.

If knocking on the starter makes it work everytime then it might need a shim installed between the starter and the block to hold it in a slightly different position to keep the drive gear from wedging into the flywheel

Theres a solenoid on the starter to engage the starter onto the flywheel. The solenoid could be going out.

My 2011 KIA Sportage won't start. Put a new battery in and still wont start lights , radio all come on just won't turn over. What to do?

Just a thought since my sons 07 kia was having trouble starting a couple months ago. His is a standard shift, voltage good, I reached under dash and pushed clutch pedal switch plunger button in. Punt in neutral and pulled emergency brake and turned the key, cranks right up. It was not the switch, the pedal linkage/rod to the pedal has a flat plate off to the side the plate which pushes in the clutch pedal plunger to the switch. The plate has a hole in it but I did not know what goes in the hole, I put a flat bolt and nut on it . It has been cranking fine for a couple months. The switch plunger was going in the hole sometimes and the car would not start. The clutch pedal switch will not let the car crank unless the clutch is pushed in. If your car is an Automatic the neutral safety switch on the transmission will do the same thing it has to be in park or neutral. I am having second thoughts I am pretty sure it was clutch pedal switch but having a odd thought it may have been brake pedal switch. You might even be able to put duct tape over the hole till you get the correct plug for the hole if this is your problem.

Kia sportage cranks but seldom starts??

Have you checked the fuel pump relay to see if it is sending power to the pump ? The computer grounds the relay when the computer "sees" oil pressure or engine RPM.

"i have a 99 kia sportage i just replaced the

That is a problem for the experienced mechanic
I would start at the battery, all cables, wires ground wires
& look at the alternator output, current & diodes.
Sounds like a module is not getting battery voltage or
could be an issue also
Don't see the starter in that picture unless you had no
problems before it got put in ,then something other
than the starter was disturbed or grounded out by the key
being on etc, sloppy work practice & ruined something

I have a 99 Kia Sportage. It will not start and is making a whining sound. I installed a new starter and it still is making the same whining noise. Is the engine blown? Do I need to install some shims?...

can be a broken timing belt this is prone to breakage why ? here the thing 99 kia sportage are all twin cams that mean if the belt breaks it is most likely to cause cylinder damage so remove the front cover you dont have to do it all the way but just to access the timing belt with a screw driver can you push of the timing belt with little to no effort if you can the belt is broken now since you already crank it get a crayon and mark it crank the engine did that crayon mark move? if it did its a good thing and lets go to the starter can you access the crank pulley or if you a stick shift can some one push start you if you can move the crank pulley at least 1/4 of the way then crank the engine you may have a dead spot on the flywheel by the way there is no shim

2000 kia sportage engine wont start when hot it cranks and when it bucks the starter it will start

sounds **** it jumped timing bad belt dont start it cause you run the risk of smashing a valve while it is out of time this is my thought
  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
  3. Turn off all electrical loads.
  4. Connect a tachometer and verify idle speed is between 750-850 RPM.
  5. Connect a timing light to number one cylinder.
  6. Verify the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the timing mark on the timing belt cover are aligned at 4°BTDC.
