2000 Nissan Xterra has power but then dies

My Xterra died on me when i was driving home. I had turned on the heater and thats when all my lights went dim, and all the check lights came on. I was able to get it home but tried to start it and it wouldn't start. A week before this happen I had a belt that made noise and then a couple days later the belt didn't make any noise and thats when my car died.

I have the same problem as well.

  • scrafferty Mar 02, 2009

I have the same problem. I can be driving and the vehicle will almost completely shut off all electrical power several times. If I can get'er keep her running, everything seems fine until I stop and shut her off and later recrank. It was intermittent but now it is happening more often.

Now the vehicle will not crank and am afraid that the starter is shot also.

Sounds like the belt has something to do with charging the battery. We had a truck that the alternator belt was slipping so the battery was not charging enough to run the lights and would go dead when shut off.

I suggest you begin by charging and testing the battery, your description indicates it is discharged.

Why it is discharged remains to be seen - you need to check the alternator drive belt and the alternator charging.

Distributor, open it up and take a look under he rotor. The bearings usually brake and will not allow the car to restart.

Could be the distributor. Bearings are notorious for failing which affects the cam position sensor in the unit. Did you have any codes thrown to the display ?

I guess its a common problem for xterras just to die when driving huuh lol.... just like all of you. i was driving and mine died at a stop light to lol.... people keep telling me that it might be the timing belt or distributor ( if you remove the distributor cap and someone turns the key a little, if the rotor spins that means the distributor took a dump.. and if the rotor dont spin the timing belt took a dump... i will be checking this out to see if its true this weekend..
