Power steering fluid leaking?

Dealer says I have a small leak. I dont see any evidence anywhere, no leakage on garage, driveway etc. He says it is a pressurized system so I assume the car has to be running for it to leak. But it is obviously running when I start it, park it, etc. Never seen anything. Dont know if this is just an attempt to jack up my bill. Other than watching the fluid level & looking for signs of leakage I dont know what else to do.

Robert, Use a strong flashlight and check from top and bottom. If you need to jack vehicle to check underneath the engine, please secure it with jack stands (don't rely on the floor jack or your vehicle's tire change jack). If you don't see evidence and have not lost any fluid then there is nothing wrong. Any visible "wetness" is acceptable as long as it is not dripping or running when engine is running. Check all your fluids and make sure it is serviced per manufacture recommendations or your owners manual. Check it again after one month, if the fluid level is fine, then the car is fine. Also place a cardboard on the floor where you park overnight and see if you have any evidence. Sometimes during oil changes, depending of filter location, droplets are common as well as from the oil pan drain plug during removal. As long as it does not elak after installation, you are fine.

SOURCE: Power steering leak

well, i have the same problem. if it is not a large leak, i would continually monitor the level and add fluid as needed(atf fluid). But ideally the hose should either be "pathched" though not advised, or replaced.

sorry that you too have this problem!
I hope that you find this helpful!

The power steering container is at the front of the engine on drivers (left) side. Unscrew the lid and check the level add some if low.If that don't help then replace p s pump.

I would guess that this car is still under warranty. If it were mine I would take it to another dealer and get a second opinion.

I,ve had the same problem. After a while, the car would not start easily even when warm. The problem was solved by replacing faulty spark plug wires. I see you have already done this so my only advice is to check those HT leads again by measuring them.

Bleed power steering on 2008 dodge avenger

to bleed power steering, with front wheels off ground slightly with front wheels pointing straight ahead.engine off. remove power steering filler cap.add power steering until fluid level stop dropping, wait couple minutes and wait, add fluid until level stay at full cold mark on power steering cap dip stick. dont over fill.when fluid level stop dropping, start vechicle, let it idle few minutes. see if fluid level drop if so add more fluid full cold mark.then turn steering all the way to left and right with out hitting a stop.turn steering wheel several times, then turn front wheels pointing forward check power steering fluid level.if power steering fluid level stop dropping air should be out of system, if steering turning wheel dont turn smoothly and power steering fluid look light tan color air getting in the system.check all power steering lines to rack and power steering pump for leaks.be sure you replaced all the power steering lines with new o rings if not you will get a leak.if you find a leak, you need to fix the leak and bleed system again.dont drive vechicle if your steering dont feel right, have vechicle towed to a garage.

I have no power steering and I see a puddle of red liquid on the ground.

Hi,

That red puddle is the fluid that leaks out from your power steering.

There are some possible leakage, it maybe in your powwr steering hose, pump, and rack and pinion.

The only way you could determine where the leakage is to have your car checked by a technician/mechanic.

Try to put some haydraulic fluid in the power steering conatiner, so that you could go to the garage and have them fix it.

Thanks for using Fixya and helping you out!

Many "pour in" chems are harsh and will not only swell the seals you need swelled but ALL seals. I have had a lot of success with Lucas additive. It seems not be as harsh as other products and is a good lubricant and conditioner. I recommend you drain the system if possible to get rid of as much old oil and contamination as possible to prevent additional wear as well.
