Engine won't shut off '91 Escort GT

Engine won't shut off with ignition key, accessory lights on dash stay on also. Have to stall it to stop engine, (accessory lights still stay on)then disconnect battery. NOT run-on. Also noticed the ignition switch courtesy light no longer comes on.
1991 Escort GT, 1.8 Litre OHC, 5 speed standard. Runs excellent otherwise. Shut-off relay not powering up??

    Thank you TLRogue and emissionwiz.

Price of new tumbler, $200 CAD, new ignition switch, $500+.Very scarce in the scrapyards here because it is the GT model. The ignition switch assembly fits over the steering spindle in the GT. Not an easy replacement but not impossible. One of two connectors behind the switch has two heavy gauge black wires. I disconnect that and all is well after stalling the engine to stop it.Because they are both black I suggest that they are the same wire using the ignition switch as an interrupt. Unless there is a faulty powered relay on that same line then it is indeed the ignition switch.

Not a problem with a wet fuse box, windshield is sealed tight and fuses are dry.

Check the fuse box is not full of water.
Thet suffered from leaking windscreens, and it filled the fuse box.
If not, you are looking at a faulty ignition switch.

Replaced iac valve engine will not idle

wow , no year stated. amazing....
which engine? size and gAS or diesel>?
stalls only hot?
is thermostat good and holding 180F or more???????
why gue$$ ?

Stalls have huge causes.
1: the ISC sticks is but 1 of 50 causes (have list, i pass)
misfire is the other
the EFI Tries very very hard to stop stalls, (opens ISC/IAC 100%)
if it can't. it stalls.
why did it stall, lots of ways.
Misfire from too lean or flooding.
EGR stuck open. is #1 all top DOG for stalls.
EGR can stick open, and when it does, it will stall

no the big questions, not ever answered here ever.....>>
can you save the stall with a fast right foot action.?
easy
tad hard.
impossible.
The answer here, can save tons of hard work.

and is the CEL glow key on, in the dash? Check engine light at key on
then stay out driving, NO< why not scan this car.
do not ever ignore this lamp, scan it or spend eternity fixing car.
buy a scan tool, and learn to use it.
learn how sensors. work and how they read.
learn what closed loop is. (if not in CL hot , fix that now)

if the engine drops closed loop, hot, at idle this means
fueling is out of control and idle is only a victim.
check closed loop status hot engine. and win.

here are all the steps 1 by one on a good engine.

this is just a typical 1.6L 16valve SOHC engine.
MAF based injection, here. any motor with maf , like this..

Engine runs on when switched off

Bad ignition switch. bet you have a large bunch of keys hanging and swinging in the ignition.

2002 f350 will not shut off with key. with key removed dash lights stay on and engine continues to run must pull injector relay to shut down. the dash lights stay on as if you turned the key to accesory...

ok well this is where you might be incorrect... either you have a 12 volt wire bleeding scross or you have a bad ignition switch. the run wire off the ignition switch is the only thing that will keep it running unless you have a remote start then of course that could keep the engine running. you might want to start by making sure the ignition switch is beaking the signal to the PCM.

1997 GMC Jimmy 4.3. It runs great. I will drive it for 30-45 min and then it will die on me. All dash lights will come on just like if you turn the key on and not start the engine. It will restart and then...

When the engine dies do the accessories such as radio, lights, heater all die along with the engine; or do they keep running as they were prior to the stall?
If they all quit together (as if the key was shut off) I would check the electrical part of the ignition switch or the battery cables and connections (check both ends of cables and little ground wire near battery that connects to car body). The ignition switches are a well known culprit in the s10's.

If the radio and lights keep running after the stall, I would look at the crank position sensor, ignition coils etc.

Good Luck!

I drive a 1993 Ford Escort 1.8D. For the car to start i have too remove the plunger from the shut-off solenoid on the fuel pump, but even when the car is running and I remove the key the car is still...

Sounds like a possible bad Solenoid, for the Starter. Maybe, bad Ignition Switch. No idea, without the Wiring Diagram. Do you own the Repair Manual? If not get one. Check for Power at Glow Plugs, when Engine is shut off. You will need a Test Light and DVOM.

1998 escort zx2 dome light stays on when switch is set for door; all other indicators, chime for key in ignition etc seem OK. Light works normally in switch on and off positions.

It should stay on for about 30 seconds and go off. Otherwise, the car is 11 years old, so find a switch position which does not drain the battery.

Looks like you are low on engine oil and light is coming on as indicator and simultaneously stopping the engine from overheating

My car surges some times

Follow this procedure for these kinds of problems.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

dodgy switch in a door pillar is the cause of the interior light staying on,engine needs new valve /solonoid for it to stop ,the rubber seal on the bottom has perished and you cant buy that on its own,its a complete unit about 70€ .fits on top of the injector pump under the antitheft shroud
