ALL tHAT IS NORMAL AND 200F STAT THE FAN KICKS IN AT 225F AND BOILS AT 265f THE DASH GAUGE IS ONLY TOY, BUT ONCE USED TO IT ,IT HAS MERIT.
ONLY a SCAN TOOL USING PID SCANS TO THE ECT TELLS THE TRUTH. OR LACKING AN IR THERMO GUN, TOOL.
MUST BE YOUR FIRST CAR AND CLUSTER WITH CHEAP GAUGES. NOTHING NEW THERE,
top cause of overheating, is THE THERMOSTAT NEVER LASTED 22 YEARS EVER. I'D NEVER RISK ANY GOOD ENGINE WITH SOME OLD STAT.
mark ask your dad if that gauge looks odd. even on hills the fans come on, 100% normal HOT DAYS, YES FOR SURE AT STOP SIGNALS , CAR STOPPED, SO FAN GOES ON. A/C ON yES UP HILLS YES. PULLING LOADS (TRAILER) OR TRUNK FULL OF BRICKS, YES. THE GAUGE MUST NOT MAX OUT AND PEG, OR CAUSE: ENGINE POWER TO DROP OR HEAR PING. OR CAUSE STEAM UNDER THE HOOD NOR COOLANT TO THE GROUND ASK DAD AGAIN,
Ok........before replacing the thermostat, I would have run the car for 15-20 minutes, then turned the engine offf.......then feel the top and bottom radiator hoses.....if they are the same, and the fan did not come on, then this would be the fault........however, if the top was boiling hot and the bottom was cold this would indicate a faulty thermostat...........
Next step, as the thermostat is new.......run this test again and if the hoses are different temperatures, then this might indicate a blocked radiator......BUT more info required....is the temperature gauge going past half way ?????
good chance you t-stat is stuck open that will cause the temp gauge to not get all the way to normal operating temp. also e.c.t can cause this problem. good luck hope that helps. to bridge your connector it will not really tell you to much if you take a multi meter and check the green wire and put the other wire to ground you can see the signal voltage less then 6v
