I reset my check engine light and about 100 miles or so the light caome back on with the same code for the canister vent valve being bad but i want to get it off to test and make sure it is not gummed up or if it is bad
It is bad it is filled with dirt. It is located above spare tire. I found one on amazon for less than 20 dollars that was AC Delco. you will need 3" of 5/8 heater hose and 2 hose clamps for the hard plastic line that will not come of just cut with razor knife as close to valve as possible. within inch and use hose to patch back together and you're good for another hundred k.hope this helps.

DTC P0496 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Flow During Non-Purge
If the EVAP purge valve does not seal properly, fuel vapors could
enter the engine at an undesired timing causing drivability concerns.
The control module tests for this by commanding the EVAP purge valve OFF
closed and vent valve ON closed, sealing the system, and monitoring the
FTP for an increase in vacuum. If the control module detects that Evap
system vacuum increases above a calibrated value, DTC P0496 will be set.
This could be a sign that your purge valve is intermittently failing
so you might want to get it checked out before it turns into a bigger
problem that affects the drivability of your truck.
EVAP is located behind the throttle body, near the front of the engine...

The first step would be to simply clean the valve and see if that helps.
The purge valve will be an inexpensive part (probably $20.00 or so) so
I'd usually just replace it instead of trying to test it to thoroughly.
I've found it can be a somewhat tough part to come by a third party
dealers (Napa, Autozone, etc.) So you might have to contact your local
GMC dealership parts department to buy the part.
The best thing to do would be to ask the person at the repair dept
who sells you the part to copy the page with the replacement guidelines
from the service manual. You usually won't have any trouble getting them
to do this and then you'll have a good written copy to follow while you
change the valve.
The other option would be to have a local mechanic do the replacement for you.
Hope helps.

This is a safety feature that the vehicle brings. You need to reset the E.C.U on dealership or it will keep doing it to you. It was probably caused by one single time that you did not closed the fuel cap correctly. Good luck
SOURCE: '04 GMC Yukon Denali Check Engine Light
Did u put in fuel shortly before the light came on? I own 2 service centers & the most common situation with "Check Engine" lights are because the fuel cap wasn't re-installed or not tightened. When you refuel make sure it "clicks" when putting back on. We don't charge for a "Code Reading" but a dealer will, don't go there. Go, like the others suggested. If it is the fuel cap & you re-install it correctly, the light will go off after a short drive. Good Luck. PS-Don't panic when the "Check Engine" light comes on unless it blinks, if that happens don't drive. PSS-RE: Murray's, Auto-Zone.......If it's a "Code" (the reader will give a #) the code book will tell you the problem. PSSS-Some1 please have Troy W's Mommy & Daddy take away his keyboard. Just because you can put together a "Lego" car doesn't make you a master mechanic. You only repeated what we said except you have a "Napoleon" complex against any1 plugging something in to a vehicle. It's the same as plugging in a light @ home. In conjunction with "kinder" nine out of ten time in my experience it usually is the oxygen sensor(s) which would be about right with the year model

Could also be fuel filter, pressure, vacuum leak, etc. Check these two articles out, they should help too - http://www.obd-codes.com/p0171 and http://www.obd-codes.com/p0174
