I have a 1998 dodge intripid, not shifting

The check engine light came on after i realize the speedometer was not working and not shifting gears. is it the transmission, and why would the speedometer stop working?

I have the same problem - but my speedometer is working, the check engine light is on and sounds like the car is stuck in 2nd gear. I can drive it up to 60 mph.

Sounds like the Vehicle Speed Sensor has failed, replace it.

Transmission is not shifting gears while driving

First check fluid level. is check engine light on? is speedometer working? this can be caused by a malfuncition vehicle speed sensor or a mechanical condition such as a clogged filtre.

Speedometer not working, high revs & won't shift out of low gear

Your issue is a bad "speed sensor". Your speedometer is controlled by a sensor in your transmission, and when it quits working your speedometer will not work, it can cause very irregular shift patterns and slipping. Replacing your speed sensor should resolve your issues.

I hope this helps you, and I wish you luck on your repair.
