Where is the vss located on a 95 ford windstar. The speedometer went ouit and its shifting crazy.

The vehicle speed sensor is located on transaxle in behind the engine.
Tricky to get at and not an easy replacement.
While it is possible the sensor is bad, the more common issue with your Windstar is the speedometer itself.
You should have it properly diagnosed before replacing parts.
If the speedometer is the defect you will need to replace the instrument panel as an assembly.
Using parts from a recycler will often result with another bad speedometer as it is a very common problem.
Some aftermarket auto supply may be able to get you a rebuilt unit.
if not you may have to get it from Ford.

Cannot find tranny oil fill plug for 1995 ford Escort

LEVEL CHECK -manual transmission The vehicle speed sensor (speedometer gear), which is located on the transaxle, serves as the manual transaxle's dipstick.
  1. Park the car on a level surface, turn the engine OFF and apply the parking brake.
  2. Locate the speedometer cable assembly where it enters the transaxle.
  3. Unplug the electrical connection from the vehicle speed sensor (speedometer gear).
  4. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the speed sensor.
  5. Wipe the area around the speed sensor with a clean rag, then loosen the speed sensor retaining bolt.
  6. Gently pry the speed sensor from the transaxle. Fig. 1: Location of the manual transaxle's fluid level marks — 1.8L engine 90981g14.gif
Fig. 2: Location of the manual transaxle's fluid level marks — 1.9L and 2.0L engines 90981g15.gif

  7. Check the condition of the speed sensor O-ring and replace it if it is damaged.
  8. Check the fluid level on the speed sensor as illustrated.
  9. If the level is low, place a funnel in the speed sensor hole.
  10. Add the specified fluid to the transaxle until the FULL level is reached. Do not overfill the transaxle.
  11. Install the speed sensor and tighten the retaining bolt to 69–104 inch lbs. (8–12 Nm).
  12. Connect the speedometer cable.
  13. Engage the speed sensor electrical connection. Fig. 3: If necessary, add transmission fluid through a funnel into the speed sensor opening 90981g16.gif

I was just wondering, where would the Speedometer Sensor be located on a 1997 1.8L Golf CL?

The speedometer sensor or VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is usually located on the transmission.

Car speedo & odometer sometimes work OK, other times not at all.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.
