Speedometer dead! 2000 Dodge Dakota 4x4 5.9. My speedometer will not go over 5mph rgardless of actual speed, at the same time the abs, brake light and check engine light all come on, causing the transmission to shift late.

It depends upon why they are lit. Are you having issue with the speedometer as well? If so, replace the speed sensor in the rear differential. Otherwise, see a mechanic to determine why the lighs are lit.
It is your speed sensor in the rear end...it is used for the ABS system, as well as low speed speedometer readings. I have had the same problem. It will cause the BRAKE and ABS lights to light as well as affect the speedo under 35 mph. It is an easy fix, and can be done by a DIYer or a shop for about $100.00.
The speed sensor that controls the speedometer is located in the top of the rear differential housing, this is your most likely problem and is very common with this vehicle. Being that it is a direct input to the ABS module it will cause those indicators to illuminate when the sensor fails.
Check for disconnected ABS sensors. The front sensors in the front are located next to the axle shafts. The rear sensor is located on the rear differential housing itself on top, in the middle. The ABS is monitored by the computer for performance. The ABS kicks on when the vehicle comes from a certain speed to a dead stop, keeping the wheels from locking up. That could be the reason for the speedometer not working. Or it could be a bad speed sensor. Both can also trigger the check engine light because it is monitored by the computer. The brake light usually comes on due to low fluid level. It can trigger the light, but not be low enough to impact brake performance.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE BROKEN WIRE LEADING TO SPEED SENSOR IN REAR DIFF..CHECK FOR ANY SPOTS IN HARNESS WHERE IT LOOKS OUT OF PLACE OR RUBBING ON SOMETHING..ALSO CHECK FOR SPREAD CONNECTIONS IN PLUG AT SENSOR..CHECK ALL FUSES RELATED TO ABS SYSTEM IN UNDERHOOD FUSE/RELAY CENTER
it sounds like it is the speedometer cable that goes from the speedometer gauge to the transmission is wearing out.unless you have done one of these before then i would suggest having someone do it for you.
